Red-Orange is the highest I've ever seen it, Red is freeway speeds for several minutes on a hot day, blue is cold ambient temp (late night, early morning).

At what point is it overheating to the point where I should shut off and stop riding ('85 VF500F)?

    How Hot Is Too Hot

Well, my bike is a '87 vf 750. I noticed that in urban cycle (traffic, stop and go...) after half an hour temp is always too hot. I think that the fan switch sensor (on the radiator) begins to work at a too high temp (near the red zone) so the engine can not refresh itself. I mounted a manual switch to activate the fan before the temp begins to become "red". As a result the engine runs well, no carburation "holes" and the cooling liquid does not boil at all ! And gasoline consumption is much better (actually 1 liter of "green/unleaded benzine" costs 1,430 € = about 2.30 usd/liter ) here in Europe !!!

good idea. i am going to try hooking it up to a manual switch because you are correct the fan does not turn on until the temp is either at or near red zone! and that scares me on my bike because i dont want to hurt the motor.

My fan clicks on at about the half way mark. I'm fairly certain my thermostat is working correctly, but I'll inspect it anyway.
