How are these prices? Need your advice!!

I was quoted $52 for a radiator cap and thermostat for my 84' VF500 from a buddies shop. Correction, he quoted me $30, and now that the parts are in, he's asking $50

The thermostat sat for 7years with no fluid in/on it and was a bear to clean up.

Hence, my cooling system isn't the best at this moment.

I was already quoted $34 for the thermostat and $55 for the cap at State ? here in Ohio.

But would anybody else know of a website that has these parts cheaper than $50 bucks??

What company carries aftermarket for this model???

None of the shops around me can get any.

And the bike does need a new thermostat. It won't open!!!

With the bike running with the cap off, there is no flow.

The temp gauge goes past the half mark and reaches 5/8 and climbing.

The fluid simply will not flow...... it kinda stinks after putting the bike together.:frown:

And to answer any future questions, there is nothing blocking the system.
It was removed and cleaned thoroughly.

If you look, the thermostat they suggested in your link is not appropriate. It's too cold.
Read the last portion of the text.

However, I just got back from Autozone with a $6.99 radiator cap. : )
SCOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRREEEEE!!!!

And gronk99, I followed your link, and there prices are as follows.

Cap = $28
Thermostat = $34

Those prices are the same as my dealership near by.

Now all I need is to find a source for a Thermostat in the proper Temp range.

Well, I looked up a 1971 Toyota Celica and found a Duralast (#15368) 180 degree t-stat for $6.99 at autozone. Since stock is 185, you should be fine.

If it were me, I'd spend spend the $7 to find out if it fit or not.

 

I just picked up a Duralast #15358. It's exactly the same Temperature. Its even stamped in C just like my thermostat.

I had to remove 1mm of material in circumference on the thermostat and bevel the entire outer edge, but it went in nice. It had no side-to-side movement and the o-ring seems to be holding.

I spent $7 for it.

I ran the system without the cap, and the level went down with big bubbles popping!!
But it reached 5/8 on the temp gauge shortly after the system was flowing so I popped the fan on and it was maintain that temp and slowly lowering it.

What was weird, is that I couldn't see any flow in my radiator because of the neck. That sucks!!
But it did open up!!

But here's the problem, after the bike was fully warmed up and I popped on the radiator cap to take her for a 5-10min ride, she maintained a fully warmed up reading on the gauge, but my radiator hoses had NO PRESSURE!!!

Does that indicate a Bad Cap???

Up date: The thermostat is working nicely. I just picked up a radiator cap from Autozone for $6.99. CST #7513.

It went on perfect, but the fit is kinda soft. It didn't take as much umf! to screw the cap on.

We shall see.
And would anybody know where's the normal operating temp that the gauge should be at?? And exactly where should I start worrying when I look at the temp gauge??

I still have to acquire the OEM owners manual.
