Hi all! Dave from Cape Town, South Africa here. HI! Just appropriated myself a 1999 VFR 800FI this December. 25000 km's on the clock, gave it an oil change & new battery and drove the 1800km home in 2 days. Have had worse weekends...:star: (pics are in the gallery) Just wanted to say thanks and tip my hat to all the cats who have posted here over time, I have found (and am still finding) tons of great, accurate info that really helped me when scouting out this bike. Sincerely, THANK YOU! Cheers D.
Welcome and welcome to the crazy world of VFR ownership. Cool model there, being a 99, IMO the best of the lot
Yeah. The fuel and back-packers costs were the same as freighting it down from Pietermaritzburg, so I thought 'what the hell'. If hadn't needed to be back for work on the Monday, I would have taken an even longer route home... A really, really good 2 days in my life...
Don't you just hate it when you have to go pick p a bike you just bought and have to ride the damned thing back home? Sometimes there is just no justice at all. Welcome to the World
Randy, that is not the thing that always worries me, it is the thought that a few hundred ks into the trip the battery goes flat and we all know what that means and the usual reply from the seller is "I never had that problem before"
Believe me, Norm, I agonised over the 'long trip on a bike I don't know' question for 2 weeks before flying up (which is why I put a new battery in it there). Was only really worried about the regulator (read a few threads where these have given issues on this year model) as the bike was a two-owner and really well taken care of. Oh, and I also had the local dealer service it before I arrived. That said, this is my 3rd Honda and have never had one break down on me. With regular care and maintenance of course. I've also never not crashed a Yamaha.
