Hi everyone, I currently ride a ducati monster s2r1000 and a buell blast. I'm going to be selling the ducati and replacing it with a sport touring bike, with a little more emphasis on sport. Locally I have found a few 2007 VFRs at dealers with low/no mileage and a few used 5th/6th gen bikes through private sellers. The 5th gen bikes have slightly higher mileage (>10k) and the 6th much lower. I'd like to find a pristine, low mileage 5th gen, but I don't think that is a reality. I've been perusing the forums for pros/cons of 5th vs 6th gen bikes, but haven't found a nice objective discussion between the two. Anyone here own(ed) both and care to fill me in on the pros and cons? I know about the cam drive and other major differences, but I'm mostly curious as to maintenance differences between the two. I do all the maintenance I can (even making special tools if I need them) and have done the dreaded ducati belts and valves, numerous automotive timing belt changes (even diesels), turbofan engine repair/swap, etc... so I'm not shy of anything mechanical. I am concerned about things I need special electronics/computer software and interface to accomplish, however. Thanks for any input! I will be test riding an 07 on Friday
Threads that talk about which gen VFR is better tend to get a little touchy. Some of the 5th Gen owners conceder the 6th Gen to be barely worth the VFR name, mainly because of the VTEC motor. Some of the 6th Gen owners take exception and point out the 5th Gen's weak points. It tends to go down hill from there. Link - whats the best VFR Action's take - ride both and see which one you like better. I found a 2 year old 6th gen for a great price and have been happy with it. The VTEC valve adjustment is a PIA, but a lot of us at least double the recommended mileage. You need a few special tools to do it but you sound as if you could take it on. Nothing needs a computer that I’ve run into (except downloading maps to a Power Commander). Keep looking, lots of post on the subject. Action
I was a prospective VFR buyer up until 4 weeks ago, 2k VFR miles later I love it. It handles great(especially for its size), its comfortable for many many miles at a time, it has a very distinct sound, and you dont see many on the road. I picked up a new 07 rwb for 8k. I say go for it. I dont think id care which gen I got as long as the bike was very good condition, low mileage, and what I felt was a good deal. they both look great.
