resently i have noticed during cold weather(close to freezing) that my bike has issues starting.

I start it and it dies. then on the seond press is stays running, tried holding the starter longer to the same effect.

no idea if this is normal or if i should be worried.

All engines have trouble starting cold, especially extreme cold like what you're describing.

I'd say it's a non-issue as long as it runs fine after it warms up a bit.

    ______
The reasons for this, cold oil doesn't reduce friction as well as warm oil and cold shrinks metal; your starter is going to have a hard time cranking a very cold motor; moving parts are tighter and oil is having a hard time doing its job.

The electrolyte in your battery is significantly impacted by cold temperature, it doesn't output as much juice cold as it does when it's warm. Meaning, your starter is already working hard to turn over a cold motor and now it has less power to do its job.

Cold can cause water to develop in parts of the fuel system and fuel thickens the colder it gets, making atomization and injecting harder.

SeaFoam fuel additive claims to dry out fuel of moisture, it's worth a shot if you have significant hard starting. Also, one trick is to turn the headlamp on for about 45 seconds on Hi, this will 'excite' the electrolyte enough to warm it up a bit and allow it to deliver more juice to the starter.

on fuel injected bikes take a few seconds (like 20 or so) with the key on before pressing starter button.

On the FI Quads, bikes, etc. at work I noticed there's a whirring noise that occurs when the machine is first flipped to the On position that disappears after a few seconds. I'm guessing that's the fuel system prepping?

Ya bike runs great, and this is my first bike so figure it's better to ask than to make somthing worse.

Also i unfortinitly leave the bike outside and it is -7 or so in the morning when i ride....thats when i notice it.
(despite people saying you don't need to, i let it warm up till the temp shows up on the readout.)

That is the sound of the fuel pump priming....you might hear this on your bike most times as well.

If it does I've never heard it. I'm about to go out for a ride, I'll take note.
