I own a 1984 VF500 Interceptor. It won't idle. Have adjusted pilot screws to factory settings which made no difference, I then adjusted the screw at the front of the carbs which I took to be the idle speed screw, when I did this could get the bike to idle at just over 1000 revs but when the I rev the bike it goes up but when released it hits 3000 revs and very very slowly drops, under these circumstances bike smokes (white smoke).

Without any idle it runs well when I ride it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! Sorry, I cannot help you as I am not familar with the carbs on your bike. Do you have a manual?

You might want to PM (private message) member Jamiedaugherty on here. He is the guru on those bikes.
