Hi there everyone I'm a fairly new to the site, I have been looking at upgrades in different things on the site I am a second time owner of a VFR. My first VFR was a 500 I bought back in the late 80s, I have recently purchased a 25th anniversary 2007 model it is so much better to ride then my GSX R....... I'm loving it I do have a problem with my fans not kicking on, I saw on the site if you jump the switch and ground it to the frame the fan will kick on I made a manual kick on switch from the frame/ground. I live here in Texas and it is hot the bike never really gets about 220 so I'm seeing that's okay is there a way to check that switch other then jumping it??? :tranquillity: THANKS for the HElP!!!
I put a manual override switch on my 2003, but I used it to control a relay which turned the fans on, since the fan draws a lot of current and I didn't want to use a big switch. Only way of testing fan switch is to hook up a meter across terminals and let bike get hot and watch if meter goes to 0 Ohms.
You should be able to test the switch by heating in oil to a little above boiling point , and checking for continuity. That is, when cold it should be an open switch, and when hot the switch should close so current can flow. The switch point should be 208-216F i.e. right around water boiling point. With the ignition on and motor off, you should be able to pull the wire off the switch and ground it on the frame and the fan will come on. The function of the switch is to make that ground connection when the coolant is hot.
