Any assistance would be appreciated please if possible. My 2005 VFR 800 VTEC broke down yesterday. It wouldn't restart at a petrol stop-off.

Turn ignition on, Push starter button, engine starts to fire then dies when you release the button, but here's the strange bit, if you keep the starter button depressed it will start and tick over no problem!! You can even rev the bike if you roll your right wrist whilst keeping the starter button depressed. Weird I know, but the minute you take your finger off the starter button the bike dies.

Weird clicking/whirring sound also coming from somewhere in the dash area when ignition is switched on now. Not there before problem arose.

The RAC man didn't have a clue, and neither did his Honda mechanic mate on the phone. Tried spraying WD40 into ignition button area to clear any grit etc, and checked fuses to no avail. Any ideas on what's happening would be appreciated?

Have you get the harness recall done?
I would suggest to clean the starter button it might have faulty switch.

Will take a look at that. Somebody on another forum has suggested an earth block which I am looking into. Please keep the suggestions coming folks.

My other suggestion would be the stator and the RR

It's a bad negative in the blue or grey connector (i don't remember which off the top of my head) on the left side of the bike. The reason it runs with the starter button pressed is because it shuts off the headlights. When the headlights come back on it tries to pull too much power thru that bad connection and kills power to the computer and kills bike. If you pull out the headlight relay behind the dash it will start and run but you might notice the turn signals are slightly lit as the computer is searching for a ground. The bike will probably also then die if you turn on the turn signals. Or just get the wiring harness recall done and all should be right as rain!

Thanks for the information chaps. I have a mechanic looking at it on Sunday, but I will show him your posts as I feel pretty confident between you all you have nailed it. Nice to have people helping guys like me who's electrical experiences go no further than wiring a domestic plug!! Thanks again will post an update after Sunday.

Guys it worked. I showed my mechanic your posts. He disconnected the headlight and surprise surprise the bike started. Found a corroded connection in the earth block which he cleverly bypassed with male and female connectors and the bikes running great. He said it helped save me money by quickly diagnosing the problem thereby saving him time fault-finding. So if you boys are ever in town I owe you a beer. Regards. Tony - Luton England.
