I just about finished restoring this vfr700, I rode it tonight, it actually reminds me of a Triumph Sprint 955 I owned in the past. However I seem to have this throttle issue, I just cant put my finger on the problem. If I physically turn the throttle opposite way of accelleration the bike will idle around 1000 RPM, if I allow it to sit on its own, the bike will only idle down to around 2000 RPM. The return cable has no more adjustment to make it tight, it actually appears to have no adjustment at all, like it just sits in the cable holder and bolts in place on the throttle plate with no adjuster. The bike also seems to smell like the choke is on, but its not, and all the chokes are closed at the carbs definitely. The bike also starts easily choke on or off, does that mean I have one or more bad chokes at the carbs? And they are just open all the time due to being bad internally?

However it may just be the high idle causing the smell. Im going to investigate more tomorrow, but can someone post a photo of where the throttle cables go on the adjustment plate at the carbs?

The throttle snaps closed, I just have to turn it the opposite way tighter slightly to get the idle I want.

Did you do a good bench-sync before installing the carbs? If they're way off, you could be at the end of the idle adjustment screw before the idle is in the proper range.

^^ He's right. Both cables need some free-play slack before they start pulling on the throttle. If you can't bring the idle down to a reasonable 1200 rpms using the idle speed adjusting screw, synch could be way off, cables adjusted wrong, or there's an air leak around the mounting boots. :eagerness:
