So I'm in Europe renting an 08 VFR and now the chain is dragging on the center stand. You can feel the shudder if I just roll off the throttle. The problem is, I'm almost at the end of my trip and I have to make it from Rome to London on this chain. I'm riding over the weekend so don't know where to go to get two links taken out. I've hit the limit of adjustment with this chain. it has about 16,000 miles on it and I have about 1200 miles left in my trip. You think it's ready to break? Do I risk the danger of locking the rear wheel or am I just going to get stranded on the side of the road?

    Thanks.

I don't know if it's ready to blow but being that your at the end of your limit and it's dragging on the center stand that can't be a good thing.

I would get a new chain before removing the links simply because your chain is now stretched, taking a link out is cheating IMO. I don't have experience with what happens when a chain breaks but have heard it just falls of the back of the bike leaving you stranded.

Call up your rental company and see if they can arrange something for you.

broken chain can also wrap up around front sprocket and usually destroys the engine by ripping off bolts and their mounting points around sprocket cover and can even put a hole in the crankcase !!

They gave you a bike that was not ready for your trip.....

good luck....it does sound like a great ride !

you dont do anything. you call your rental company, and tell them the bike is unsafe. The chain has stretched beyond the safety limits, the adjusters are all the way out, and the sprockets need changing. Anything you do, may void your contract, and you just bought that bike!!

They will most likly send you to a local shop nearest you to have new sprockets and chain put on it. sorry for your luck. Next time, try to inspect the bike before you rent it.
