I got an nice old Shoei helmet with my VFR but the lining/foam is shot. Anybody ever tried to replace or make up a new one and is it worth the trouble? Thanks.

absolutley not, buy a new one. helmets should be replaced every 5 yrs or so. the shell and the eps liner go bad over time and no longer provide the intended protection.

If you don't know the history of the helmet, then for sure go for a new one. If the helmet is relatively new and it is just the inside padding that is worn, then you can order new linings from Shoei. If the helmet was ever dropped or suffered a crash then it is absolutely in need of replacement. But if the helmet was only worn for a thousand miles or so over 5 years, and it had been properly stored, then I would think it was good still. My last helmet I got less than four years out of. But in those four years, I put about 60,000 miles on it so there was thousands of hours subject to rain, sun and all that other crap which of course shortens the life of a helmet

But you can get into a brand new Shoei for a couple hundred and is it worth the risk not getting new?

That's generally when I replace mine; when the insides are showing the beginnings of the "end of life" syndrome.

before you throw that out, cut the straps off of it so nobody can use it again. Helmets only last 3-5 years and that assumes you bought new and know the history. Trash it ASAP, wouldn't even consider using it. Try newenough.com or thefind.com to find good deals on new buckets

Treat yourself to a new brain bucket for gawds sake mate! You got one noggin, and its one of the nicer things in life to speed around with a nice bucket on your head. I save all my old lids, sometimes if I carry a passenger that I dont give a shate about, I let them wear one of mine that I concussed myself in. Cheers
