Bought a vfr 800 at a auction. The auctioneer said it was a 2000. Didn't know it was
a vfr till I took off the seat. How can I tell what year it is for sure?
also it has no mirrors. and no front turn signals. Is there a year where
the signals came on the mirrors? Every picture I look at shows turn signals
on the front but the is no sign of where they used to be. Any help
is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if it's a US bike and it's yellow would be the first *clue* that it's a 2000 - but bikes get painted and that's no proof one way or another.

There's usually an ID tag on the side of the frame that shows the year but from the sounds of things, this bike's been messed with a good bit so it's anyone's guess.

What does the VIN number say stamped on the steering stem behind the headlight?

I'll have to check the steering stem when I get off but I can tell the gas
tank used to be yellow, but other plastic used to be red. so
yea its been messed with a lot. Its all black now. So I guess I
need to install the mirrors with turn signals, any idea how hard that
    will be?

depends on what you want. There are LED turnsignal mirros on ebay for $40 or so. Connects with two wires per side. They are what I'm using

Welcome to the forum. Why not post up some pix and we will see if we can help you out. Thre year of the bike is embedded in the VIN. You can find out what numbers refer to the year by using google to find some instructions.
