Hi guys. I just registered, and to comply with standard forum etiquette, my first post is my introduction, and to say hi! My name is Rich, i'm a musician in the UK and professionally, go by the name Vida. You can call me either! I'm 34 y/o, and have never had a road bike before and I'm doing my full test this week! I'm not new to riding though, as I've grown up on moto-x since being a kid. I have ridden my Dad's ZZR1100 a couple times, and when i'm in Cyprus (i gig there quite a bit) i have a 750 Shadow, - big old lazy cruiser.. So, within 2 weeks i'm hoping to have my first bike, (having passed my test!) and i'd like that to be a VFR800 Vtec. I'm totally new to this bike, and only know about it after asking advice from a good friend who's hugely into bikes. He's more of a all out racer, but after telling him my preferences of wanting a fast bike that will be happy to shoot to Spain whenever i want, and that also looks good, he suggested the VFR and that i "can't go wrong" with one. I have done loads of sourcing and reading up about them. I absolutely love the looks, especially the bright red - gorgeous! I want to spend £3-4k tops on the best possible one i can find. So, that's me. Hi everybody, i look forward to receiving your expert opinions!! cheers Vida

Welcome to the zoo lad, and your friend is mostly correct. The VFR is a GREAT road bike, with comfort that is far better than any of the 'super sport' models while maintaining performance and handling that is close enough for anything you can reasonably do on public roads.

IMHO, I would look for a 'Gen 5' or earlier. Not that the V-TEC (Gen 6) is a *bad* choice; but one of the characteristics that defined the VFR originally was the 'whine' of the cam drive gears. The V-TEC bikes don't have this. Again, just my opinion (I'm sure others will be along with theirs).
