    howdy,
all new to this posting on forums stuff, just bought my first road bike in ages and flicking through some forums came across this one.
I bought a 98 vfr 800, if any one else out there familiar with my other bike, ktm 525, would understand why a vfr is a more attractive propersition on a long ride. I am a little concerned though now after reading some of the topics about the reliability of the vfr, I have not long had one and already the F1 light comes on during a ride, tried using the trouble shooting guide in the manual, but stopped counting blinks after about 3 minutes.
I am the first to admit my ignorance when it comes to road bikes and i must ask the question as to whether the vfr is a lemon.
Any replies to the contrary to restore my faith in the bike would be appreciated.

have you gotten a Haynes or Clymer manual?? Those will usually help you with your trouble shooting. Elec. probs will drive you nuts. I had the RR problem and the manual, as well as a lot of hunting helped me pinpoint and make sure nothing else was wrong. I could look at the manual if you give me a holler.

Welcome to the forum. I can say that so far my 93 VFR750 has not given me any problems. And from readin posts here and on other forums the overall opinion is that the VFR is a erliable machine. I cannot speak for the FI light as I have mo experience with it. I can ask, however, if the bike is stock, or does it have an aftermarket exhaust? Not sure if that will cause the light to be tripped or not. LIke I said, I don't have experience with the FI bikes.
Again, welcome to the forum, there is probabyl someone here who can provide some insight. :) And a service manual will definately help you in the troubleshooting department.

I have been trying to follow instructions in the original honda workshop manual to try and bring up fault codes, without success. All I can seem to do is get the f1 light to blink on and off continuously, doesnt seem to correspond with what I should expect from the manuals directions.

Since I don't have a manual for that year in front of me, I can only draw on my experience with cars, mostly dodges. From past experience, the light (in my case the check engine light) will blink x number of times, then there is a pause, and then blink again x number of times, then another pause, etc. Depending on the number of digits in the code (1, 2, 3, etc.) the pasue between digits will be shorter than the ones between codes. There should also be a code to let you know when it has reached the end of the diagnostic and then it may or may not repeat the codes.

Again, this is just from my experience with cars and it may or may not transfer well to your situation. Hope it helps.

I have the same model and the only time my FI light came on was when I dropped the bike and picked it up and tried to start it. I had to wait a few minutes, cry over the scratches, and then start it back up.
