I put on my headers(motad) the other day and started it up after putting it on. Now if I wanted to ride like this for a night or two, would it affect the motor in a bad way? Just asking because I was talking to a guy at work about it and he said since it's fuel injected and not carbourated that it would hurt it. He was not for sure on this so before I do this and go riding tonight I thought I would ask first. I was really loud in the garage, hopefully not to loud outside. I will see how I like it for now, that is if I can do it without hurting anything.

I ran my '96 without the slip-on for a while... It was REALLY loud - like a dragster getting ready to do a burnout!

I doubt as if it will hurt anything to run it like that, except your wallet when you get nicked with a noise ordinance ticket...:wink:

Wouldnt do it for an extended period of time, No muffler or cat = No back pressure. Fuel systems not mapped for that either.

I'm no engine guru, so I don't know the answer. I will say this, it seems like all the race cars out there do not have mufflers. So it must do some thing positive for horse power. Those engines also don't make it very long before a rebuild.

If an engine is not jetted for it, it will most likely run like shit in the low end. You will lose the low-end torque. Not to mention you will annoy the hell out of other drivers. My advice, plug that sucker back up! Here's a comment that I wrote in an older thread that I did not feel like re-writing, so I cut and pasted.

Well, you need to look no further than racing engines to see that less backpressure can mean more power, however you would need to re-jet your bike as it now can flow exhaust much more freely, but you may lose out low-end torque in the process.

Well, more power, that's why people put larger diameter, or shorter exhaust pipes on their car/bike in the first place, but in the process you can lose low end torque, because the same volume of air moving through a larger pipe flows at a lower velocity, or in a very short pipe creates less suction, which leads to poorer scavenging, so less fresh air into the cylinder with each stroke, and so forth. Some mistakenly think that the loss in torque is because of "less backpressure" as though backpressure was a good thing. It's not. The best exhaust systems simply take all the flow restrictions out of the smaller diameter piping thus decreasing backpressure for higher horsepower, but maintaining the same high flow rates for good low end torque.

I know that some engines seem to sometimes need a certain amount of back pressure to run best, however, as long as you re-jetted your engine corrected so you don't burn a hole in your piston, or burn your valves, seems like it should be ok. I can remember running my old Fizzer with straight headers to see what it was like and all the low end torque was gone but the midrange was killer....without rejetting of course.

I am an old fuddy duddy when it comes to vehicle noise. It seems every other guy in this town drives a big diesel pick up and they all think it's cool to put straight pipes on them. And they all go to work before I do and they all wake me up before I need to with their loud ass POSs. Then there's the HDs that they all ride on the weekends with their loud ass pipes waking me up again early in the morning or late at night.
THEY ALL PISS ME OFF.
So, I like having a quiet machine.

I couldn't agree more Drewl. Less is more to me. I don't mind a throaty sound on a sportbike...IF it is at reasonable level....like you can start it up realitively quietly and not wake up the entire neighborhood, and/or set off car alarms. My buddies Ducati was so loud that he would do just that....wake up the entire neighborhood, and set off car alarms. I HATE overly loud exhausts. It just doesn't impress me. Here goes the "do loud pipes save lives" argument again! It is nice to go thru my neighborhood without everybody knowing I am coming....then I don't get the "I HATE YOU, WHY DON"T YOU SHOVE THAT EXAHUST UP YOUR ASS" look each time I pass a person walking, or outside.

(Too) Loud pipes create more laws....

All right I will not do it. I seen another post on this saying something about running the motor lean and cold air getting the the wrong parts of the motor easier because of the short exhaust.
