I have an 08 VFR800. About a month ago I purchased and installed the factory hard bags. The bags came with rubber spacers to go under the grab handles to fill the gap between the tailpiece and the grab handles caused by the bag mounts. So far so good. Last week I ordered the factory trunk mounting bracket, thinking that it would be handy to tie stuff to. The instructions make no mention of mounting the trunk bracket along with the saddle bags. The trunk bracket mounts in place of the grab rails and has rubber molded around it that covers the bag mounting bracket to the outside but leaves a gap on the inside between the tailpiece and bracket that looks like crap. I don't see any way to use the rubber spacers that came with the saddle bags without trimming them severely. Cutting them up is a one way trip and I don't want to destroy them if I don't have to. Surely someone has been down this road before.
Ok I figured it out and all I can say is DUH! Don't take the Honda instructions too literally. They said to use the long metal spacers under trunk bracket and you do if you don't have saddlebags. There are some thin metal spacers in the hardware bag that make everything fit fine. I still learned a few things that might help someone else doing this installation. 1. Use black RTV or some other type of adhesive to hold the spacers in place. 2. Loosen or remove ALL of the bolting on the saddle bag brackets because none of this stuff lines up very well 3. When installing the 8mm bolts that secure the trunk bracket make sure that the bracket is level with the tailpiece. Otherwise you will cross thread at least one of the bolts and you too will be the proud owner of an 8X1.25 tap
