    Hello Old_Codger,

I was looking at the GenMar site and the risers only raise the bars 3/4". Does this really make a difference as they claim for those longer rides? I put on about 450 miles the other day and only had slight aches on the wrist, but would like to put more time on the bike to eliviate any discomfort.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Try Convertibars (at Convertibars.com). I really like them.

    Hey Mike,

Do you have a picture of the Convertibars on your bike? Did you change out your cables and brake line for longer ones?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Steve,

I do have pictures of my 02 VFR with Convertibars but do not have access to them here at work. I will try to remember tonight. The Convertibars will put you WAY up and back if you chose to adjust them that way. Or they will put you WAY forward and down if you'd like or anywhere in between. I did not go with the longer cables as they're really not necessary because you're so far up and back the additional length is unnecessary. You will be sitting virtually straight up and down if you adjust them accordingly. I have also placed the Convertibars in such a position that the bars are significantly wider- which I really like. The increase in leverage in wonderful- the slightest input from pushing (or pulling) the bars will have the bike dropping to the left or right immediatly. The Throttlemeister is also attached to the Convertibars I have but I don't use the Throttlemeister near as much because with the Convertibars they're really not needed.

    VFRMike.

    steve,

I think there is a pic of my bike in the members section showing the bars. i have heli-bars and the raise it up and back some. they are another one of the popular setups available for relaxing the riding posture a bit. If you can't find a good pic, let me know and I'll snap one and put it up for you. Never mind, I just went out and snapped a couple shots since I had the bike and the camera handy. I'll put the link in this message...

    Thanks Reg..

Did you put on longer cables or re-route anything? Looks good..
Can you still move the bars lock to lock without hitting anything?

    Thanks again,

    Steve

I use the Genmars. They are just tall enough to make a world of difference, don't make the bike look goofy and only take 5 mins. to change over. I get no more sore wrists or neck or back.

I have seen the heli bars, not a bad way to go. But I prefer the stock ones.

So, you just slipped off the bars and put on the genmars then the stock bars back on on top of the Genmars? No moving of any cables or anything???

    Thanks...

That's correct! All you need to do on the stock bars is remove a thin metal retaining ring ,where the risers meet the end of the forks, loosen the one bolt on each riser and slip them off. It takes a little practice slipping them off at first, by working different positions of the front end by turning it either left or right to give you enough slack , but you have enough cable and line there to work with.

Another vote for GenMars - put them on my '92 years ago and the difference was immediately noticeable. But as Whiplash points out, they look completely natural. You can see the actual riser on my bars in the pix I've got posted - take a look at this one - click here

Put the GenMars on and just enough to make the difference. Now to work on the 'lost the feeling' in butt thing. I was told about some bicycle shorts that have gel padding that work great. Anyone try these?

BTW for you NH riders they are paving the Kanc. Real nice after lower falls to the hairpin to Loon. Watch the hairpin for some gravel. It is like marbles..

I needed to take a couple passes on nice smooth freshly paved slab...

Gel shorts are a very good thing indeed. I have a Corbin on my '92, but i still get numb after a while.
Funny you should mention the Kanc - I was up there last week with my wife and kids on a little vacation, and drove from Conway over to Lincoln. It's a freakin nightmare the entire way over! There are two sections of pavement that are pristine, but at least the first half of the way it's all chewed up. And there are a few sections where it's closed down to one lane, where you have to wait while "flag boy" gets the okay to let your direction of travel move.
It just plain sucked. My vote would be to head north up 16 past Attitash, and then follow 302 through Crawford notch. Then head down 3 back to 93 above Lincoln. although I have to admit, I haven't ridden 302 in years, so it may very well be just as bad....

I was up at the Kanc yesterday. They might have cleaned things up since last week. 302 was great and some nice new pavement. It was so clear you could see the Cog going up the Mount. Saturday we rode to Rangeley Lake. Great ride and some great long twisties..
