I'm looking into getting a usable handheld GPS because my phone is too limited for hiking and things, and I don't want to carry the garmin Nuvi I have for my camper.

I wanted to get some opinions from people on here that hike or MTB on what they use and why.

As you all know, I am always looking for a deal so don't recommend any $400 units to me unless you want me to poop.

I bought a Magellan 400 Triton for $40 on ebay. They got really bad reviews. Mine worked fine after downloading the software updates- I think that's where people were having problems.

Used it to find a long lost property stake in the deep woods.

Yeah I saw a couple different models used on craigslist. they were just a little too far off for me to waste the gas and I'd really like to see beforehand. I guess I could do the ebay route, though.

I also have a unit for my car and I suppose I could try it out and see if it works before I spend any money.

    Reg,

If I can find my old Garmin e-Trex Legend you can have it. I used to have two (one older, and one newer). It is not the most modern, or the most nifty, but it would be FREE, and it also comes with a free foot rub from Long Dong.

Other than that, if you were thinking more MTB, than hiking, you could go for the Garmin Edge. Lots of used examples on craigslist at all times usually.

If you choose to buy new, the Garmin GPSMap 64 is around $299, or less used.

Let me know if you are interested in the e-Trex
