hi guys, I hope this is the right section. Thank god i found this forum. I am very very interested in buying a early VF bike. I ve done some searching and reading up and I understand they have some problems. My question is, there is a 1986 VF500F, a 1984 VF100F and a 1983 VF750F for sale and I really like them but I can only buy one. What is the difference besides the engine displacement and looks? which is a better buy? in terms of performance and reliability? Sorry I know i shd search and read which i did, but its kind of in a hurry. Ive only ever ridden newer bikes and dirt bikes so I really appreciate ur help. I will be looking at all 3 of them this week and must make a decision soon. Thanks guys! ride safe!

I suggest to buy 3rd gen VFR if money is tight. Those bikes are simply old.Parts hard to come by and even if you get a good deal just maintaining repairing old parts will add up to original asking price. What I am saying is buying cheap bike will cost more in the long run.
You can buy decent 3rd gen (some say me included best looking VFR) for 2k

Good luck.I know I was not much help.

out of those 3 specific bikes i'd go for the VF 750 personally.
its the best balanced of the 3 mentioned and wil do the job of either of the other 2.
bear in mind first that alot depends on the overall condition of each bike. if you dont know what your looking at, get some one who does to help you.
all of these bikes are older designs, so you should be lookingto confirm mileage is in line with condition. if not ...ask questions.

however, there are a few things to check specifically for the VF 750.

firstly the gen 1 VF750 is known for wear on its cam lobes, so get this checked out.

if it has pitting on the cams you either need to get them fixed ( )
or find new ones (hard to find) or...

quit it and go for the VF thou. i like the VF 1000, its just bigger & heavier so that may or maynot suit you...

the 500 is a small ish bike and is known for hand grenading its motor if it is abused...at which point you need a new one.

so if your new to bikes get some help, from someone you trust and that knows about bikes before you decide

    good luck with your choice..

Don't get sucked in by low purchase price.

Unless you are capable of doing all the repair and maintenance work yourself, don't buy any year or size early VF-series Honda.

The cost can be offset by doing most of the work yourself, and it can be learned, but you will need patience when you do.

By the way, that looked like a really nice one.

Don't regret passing up. 500cc is too small and you'll get bored in 2weeks besides 54kilometers and her age is not worth 1800 and that's the current price with reserve not met.
Please tell that old FK he is overrating his old bike .....emotional attachment I guess..

He is asking way too much 3500? 89k?
I have to admit that I don't know Aus dollar worth.I mean is that price normal? WTF ,ok he says price is negotiable so take a test ride and offer real low like 2k and maybe settle at 2500?
I still would not touch a bike with 89k and 1984:eek::eek::eek: no matter the price.
Come on dude get over your sentimental outlook. It wears off very quick when the bike stops running and you are frustrated to find parts.Who would give a shit about the looks then.
I still think you should buy 90's + bikes.

Yeah in Melb too mate (Peninsula). There have been a few older VFRs coming up lately. What is your budget? A 95-97 would be a great bike & you could get one for 3-4k. I have seen 98 Gen 5s go for around 5k & can say that they are a great bike. Give us your price range & what you really want & I will keep my eye out as I am always looking (for fun). Good luck mate.

to be honest my budget aint that high, I want something around 2k mark. I just sold my Aprilia scooter, CBR929 and DRZ400sm. Not sure why i did that tho. I just want something classic and cheap enough to trash around yet reliable. hmmm if that makes sense :p
