A couple weeks ago, about every 3rd or 4th start up, my trip meter would reset on it's own, and the clock would be way off.

Just today I was going down the road, just before under 190 degrees on the engine temp, and all of the sudden my MPH dropped to zero (on the needle, I was still doing 60), my tachometer still worked, but my fuel/clock/trip meter etc. turned off for about a minute. Then it came back on again, but the thermostat was jumping oddly from 185-195, then right back down again.

On a side note, I found a false neutral between 5th and 6th a few moments later. That happened to me once when I first got the bike 6 months ago, but hadn't since then until today.

Now, I'm sure the false neutral and gauges aren't related, but both I'm concerned about. I have a replacement R/R for my bike, but wanted this one to go out before I put the new one in.

Suggestions/help? I don't have a volt meter or anything like that, but if it sounds like my R/R is going I'll just switch it out.

As Scuba suggested you would want to check the charging system for faults using the link provided. It is not as daunting a task as it may seem at first. Digital multimeters are not overly expensive and fairly easy to use. Hey, if I can figure out, and I hate to diagnose anything electrical in nature, you should be able to do it. LOL. If you have started experiencing problems then something is causing them and best to figure what the actual problem is first. The problems may seem like an R/R issue, but there could be other causes as well, such as a faulty stator or fried connections, etc. When you do the tests from the link Scuba provided be sure to charge the battery overnight first so that you can rule out the battery being the problem, as a discharged battery can change the results. Good luck with the testing, and by the way, Welcome to the WORLD. Sorry to hear that your first post has to do with a faulty charging system.

Oh yeah :welcome: to the madness mate
Good luck sorting out the problem. +1 to zooomczooom comment above and do use a quality multimeter cause the cheap one can give you falsty reading.

Hi mate, I would check all your connections first, specially the earth block.
You dont need a meter for that.
My 2001 has the issue of the time resetting if I try to start it before the fuel pump has finished building pressure.
I know it shouldn't happen, but it does and I've learned to live with it.
it all comes from the wiring on the 5th gen not being of a large enough gauge, and poorly designed connectors/earth block.
I was also having problems with the FI light glowing on and off with the blinkers, it cleared up once I cleaned the earth block.
When I get around to it, I'm going to upgrade as many connectors and wiring as I can.
    Good luck.
