So I have basically given up on buying Yuasa because I don't feel like I get any more for my money than I do from the Everstart AGM batteries at WalMart. So today I picked up a battery at Walmart to replace the one in my VFR800, I unpacked it and was somewhat shocked to find...

    ...I'm happy I think

Let us all fall to our knees and praise WalMart who provides for us all. Praise Walmart and the people of WalMart and the children of the people of WalMart! Amen y'all!

That isn't SEALED maintenance free battery!

That's a "Boy this is a pain in the ass filling these cells with electrolyte!" battery ;) "

The price for a legit Sealed AGM is pretty steep but worth it considering, if it is like my stock battery, will last up to 7 years.

Several possibilities here. The pic of the Wally's battery shown may be a Yuasa. Volume buying allows pasting one's own label on many things. The electrolyte capsules are clearly labeled. Could be that Yuasa has the best thing going. The battery shown may be manufactured under liscense from Yuasa.

Best way to use the capsuled eletrolyte is RTFM. Once filled and charged the batteries of this type are pretty maintenance free. At least the last two I bought are and darned if they didn't look just like a Yuasa

Wally's, depending on local regs has a good return policy. In my hood they now require a receipt. Too many "people of Walmart" trying to dump off thier dead goldfish after finding out that you have to put them in water.

Again local regs but in my hood, Wally's will properly dispose of your old battery.

There's a $9.00 core charge at my Wallys, refundable when you return the old battery. Not sure why you wouldn't take it with you in the first place, though.

It's glass-mat technology, easily filled (once and forever) with a multi-chamber electrolyte pack, then sealed, and maintenance free thereafter.

Probably somewhere on the net there are specifics by state or even municipality or by Emailing Wally's. Never had sealed battery in a bike. Had three of the ones that have the encapsulated electrolyte. What is nice about those is that even though they should be charged, there is enough juice to turn the engine over after just minutes.

Old style batteries had to be shipped dry..

There are apparently 2 kinds of people in this world, those who have bought and setup 'sealed' batteries and those who have not.

Trust me, this is a sealed type AGM battery, exactly like every other sealed Yuasa I have bought, there is even a sticker that you have to peel off that says something like: These caps are non-removable and should be considered permanent, this battery does not require the caps to be removed for re-filling or charging.

Batteries used to be, and some still are shipped dry because of battery life. As soon as you dump the electrolyte in that battery starts working (chemical reaction, that's how these work folks). Shipping them dry prevents early battery failure due to them sitting on a shelf for 5 years wet but not being used. Motorcycle batteries are very frequently shipped dry, even AGM for this very reason.

Oh, and nice find DEHNING

    Something like? LOL

I betcha that Italian dude Volta is glad to hear that those old timey batteries weren't leaking acid all over somebody's UPS truck or Heaven forbid a USPS truck. Messing with the feds can be serious biz.

I wonder how the old timey dudes that put those old timey batteries in airplanes felt when they flew inverted.

Mine metered 12.8v immediately after dumping the acid/electrolyte in and sealing it up.

Next time I will carry a voltmeter with me, just to make sure. Also some MRE's, a handcrank combo radio/TV/laptop, and a sixpack. ;)

If a guy has a good supply of Jo-jos who needs gas?

What all us new 1200 owners need is a good trailer or a full time chase truck.

US only. I don't know if they have Jo-jos or poppers in UK or OZ.

For the price of those tennies ya coulda had a new R/R..

Never could understand doing a paintjob on a beater before getting it cleaned up and running. Then again makes a great prop for sitting on or leasing out to those who are born with engineering and styling sensors in thier asses.

It was running, just not road tested. And every step was a consideration of money. i.e., if I do the body work and the bike sucks, can I still recoup my funds? answer = yes. Can't road test without lights and the plastics were busted up enough where it made sense to just fix it.

    Glad you were concerned though.

The pisser is, I knew the history of R/R issues on this model and had the ability to test the functionality on this bike weeks ago. I even considered testing but rolled the dice. Had I tested earlier, I could have had the R/R here now and been riding.

Back to your regularly scheduled topic...

    feels like it

at least it's not snake bit.

I bought my new battery from batteries plus. It was a sealed battery and ran me about $60. Don't recall what the brand name was and I'm not up on who's who in the battery industry. I just hope mine will be charging soon!
