greetings all. I decided to register here, as my wife just "gave" me her '98 VFR with 20,000 miles on it. She has decided to give up riding, but very much supports my doing so. However, she would hardly let me touch her bike, other than to change the oil/filter/coolant, etc. I have an '02 FZ1, but have really been enjoying the sportier nature of the Viffer (not to mention the V-4 sounds and the gear-driven cams)! I hope to buy some of the new logo t-shirts, and attend some events. I almost bought a 25th anniversary edition bike, but just couldn't overcome my doubts about the V-tec engine. I look forward to learning more from you guys............

welcome to the site. I wonder if you'll end up spending most of your time on board the VFR? A buddy of mine just bought a new FZ1, and I ride a 98 VFR. He decided to get the FZ1 just after riding my VFR. He was riding an R1 prior to that.

I am in Midland, TX. (& really enjoy this board)-the new calendars are great!
To: Reg71; the newer FZ1 is probably closer to the VFR than the Gen1 versions, so it's hard to say. Both are enjoyable, capable rides. I did ride the head mechanics 08 R1 recently, and it is just too hard core for a main bike-for me.
I have ridden a fair amount in So Cal, especially up around Julian, Mt. Palomar, Pauma Valley, down to DelMar. I hope the fires didn't destroy those areas.
Our best imitations of those roads are the Davis Mountains, in and around Ft. Davis/Alpine Tx, and the larger Texas Hill Country area west of Austin. I keep hoping for a V-5 VFR1200!!!!!!!!!!

I live in San Diego, and I rode by Palomar on Saturday (not up it though). It was burned, but the south grade (tight side) should be ok after some road maintenance....and the east grade (fast side) is fine far as I know. Some of Pauma Valley on Pala road burned, but not too bad. Quite a bit of the mountain got burned on the west side, but it was moving fast and left a lot of larger green trees intact in some areas. The roads around julian, and ramona, are all ok for the most part. I road them on Saturday as well. It might get a little messy after a hard rain (excess runoff because of no vegetation) though.
