I contacted the seller, as the bike sounded like it was in pretty good shape based on the description provided.

I was very disappointed when I finally received pictures.

First, the claim is that it is in "good" to "very good" condition. IMHO, it's not. The plastic is all beat to hell, broken, and needs either replacement or major rework. Part of the rear cowl is held together with what appears to be scotch tape. NADA says "good" condition means 'minor rejuvination' is required, not major rework/paint and/or replacement. This bike more fit the "fair" description.

Second, the description states "Has some cosmetic paint chips on lower cowlings but bike is in good to very good condition."

Take a look at these pics and tell me if this looks like "cosmetic paint chips" as the seller's description states. I'm only posting a couple, but I have about 8 others with very similar issues.

Finally, the description states "Bike has never been wrecked as far as I know." It is CLEAR from these photos that the bike HAS been down - the damage to the engine case and plastic on one side is consistent with a downed bike.

Perhaps it would be worth the $1,750 he originally wanted for it.
I don't think it is worth the $2,100 he raised it to the other day.
And I certainly don't believe it's worth the $5,000 he's got it listed for now.

I'd say that, if you are interested in this bike, be sure to take a closer look and judge for yourself.

I paid less than that for my 5th gen with only 4600 miles in great condition.

$5000 is too high for a 3rd gen. Guess how much I paid for mine:

The seller originally posted it with a 'Buy It Now' for $1,750. I could have 'bought it now' but I'm a fair guy, so I contacted the seller to try to work out a little better deal (for him!). Plus, I wanted to see pics and/or the bike.

Someone was supposed to come (from out of state) to see it, but changed his mind AFTER receiving more pictures of it.

As soon as the seller gets a couple calls (but nobody actually SEES it), he jacks the price to $2,100 "because people are telling me it's rare", in spite of the fact that it's in need of major bodywork repair and the eBay description is NOT accurate.

Anyways ... we go back and forth for a couple days, and when I finally get the pictures, I tried to explain that the "rarity" of the bike does NOT override the poor condition of the bike's plastics and other scrapes. I retracted my previous overly generous offers, and made a more reasonable offer.

Within hours, I get a msg from the seller. Somehow, someone from another state magically showed up out of nowhere and offered FULL asking price for the bike (then, $2100), but the seller decided he was NOT going to sell it, and jacked the price to $5,000 on eBay because he couldn't figure out how to cancel the auction.

    Do I NEED a '91 VFR? No.
Would I buy one if the price was fair, based on the condition of the bike? Yes.
Am I going to get swindled because someone thinks the fact that a bike is difficult to find overrides the obvious fact that the bike is in bad shape, and the description of the bike is completely misleading? No.

Beyond that, the seller originally acted as if he had no idea what a VFR *really* was, and didn't realize the specifics of a 3rd gen VFR. After talking with him for an hour (he just bought a used RC51), I realized this guy was playing possum. He knows exactly what the dealio is. :ninja:

Heck, he even sent me a link to a thread ON THESE FORUMS to try to convince me how rare the bike is, and how I should have no problem overpaying for it, regardless of the rough condition. Please ...

According to the eBay description: "... Bike has never been wrecked as far as I know..."

Unless someone (a potential buyer) is a complete newb, it's easy to tell that it's been down. And when there is at least ONE "inaccuracy" in a seller's description, it's my experience that there are more.

I don't know, but that's a beautiful bike. And THAT'S what I (and NADA) would consider "VERY GOOD" condition ... ;)

"Blue Book" or KBB.com, or NADA, or whatever dosent dictate what market value is. The new, new, new asking price is way too high. Check other listings around the net for that gen VFR and see what market price is. I also have a 3rd gen that i paid half that for a couple of years ago when the market was better. It appears the ebay listing was not correct, and i would just pass.

$1750 or whatever he was asking in the beginning was good.
$2500 is average price for a 3rd gen. even needing some work
    $5000 now is way overpriced.

I don't recall anybody claiming that the KBB or NADA value meant anything. My reference to NADA had to do with what constitudes "GOOD" versus "VERY GOOD" versus "FAIR", etc. In short, while the values can be subjective, you MUST have a baseline to describe the CONDITION of the bike. Otherwise, YOUR subjective opinion of what a "VERY GOOD" condition bike is will be completely different than someone else's subjective opinion.

You must have overlooked or misread that part of my post as well. The seller didn't set then new asking price because he expected to get $5,000. He set it to $5,000 because he decided that he didn't want to sell the bike *at all*, but did not know how to cancel his eBay auction.

Yes, I know. I've only owned, bought, sold, and been around VFRs for ~14 years. Thanks for the tip, though.

Oh, I was passing, all right ... ;)

Not based on the pictures and conversations I had with the seller. CLOSE, sure, but not close enough to "Buy It Now" without being able to see it, ride it, or get more pictures.

I disagree. Sure, the 3rd gen is getting more difficult to find, but to pay $2500 for something that needs ALL the plastic replaced (or completely redone), the crankcase replaced, and has been down even when the seller claims it hasn't? Not in my book.

I've watched 3rd gens in this same condition go for anywhere from $1K to $2K over the past few years. And you can quickly find a handful of 3rd gens for $2500 to $3000 that are in *pristine* condition.

It's all in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he intended to scam from the onset.

What I would say is that, once he received a little interest by some callers, he got greedy. Then he had to fully disclose to those interested parties. When that didn't work out and nobody fell for it, he covered his a$$ by saying he changed his mind and decided to keep it (upping the price to $5K).

He should have fully disclosed the condition and damages to the bike from the beginning, though. To put a couple of far-away pictures up and state that the bike is in "good to very good" condition was not, IMHO, accurate.

I was the buyer from out of state, and I too was somewhat fooled by his description. Once he sent the pics I retracted my offer because this guy wasn't being honest in his description of the bike.

Glad I didn't go out there because turns out there was one being sold locally! Ended up snatching this one up as my new bike (before I had an '85 interceptor 500)!
