Good deal?

I bought a 2000 yellow vfr yesterday for 4800, it has 22000 miles but was owened by a 57 year old motorcycle mechanic. It has a staintune high mount exhaust, a ventura bike pack system, an expandable tank bag, an extra seat that has been shaved down 3/4 of an inch and a throttle lock out. The bike is very clean the only visable damage is a quater size rip in the seat. Bike also has new tires and a magnetic tank protector. I had to go through allot of tough negotiating to get the bike for this price just wondering if any of you experts on the bike could tell me if I came out ok or if I over paid. Thanks for your help.

 

Caveat Emptor, or "let the buyer beware". Mechanic's have a sneaky way of fixing bikes up for cheap and acting like they had them for personal use. They actually get a bike to turn or to resell. They get good deals from fools who don't know how to fix their own bikes and don't know whats wrong with them. Fools who have money enough to by an expensive bike but not enough to afford for someone else to keep it running for them. When they find the bill for repairs at a dealer or pro shop is too much they sell out to a mechanic who is laughing at them while gravely looking at the bike as if it had received too much abuse from its owner. And they turn them around for profit. They know what they really have in the machine in time and materials, you don't. So deal hard with mechanics. They get breaks on parts and they have the tools they need to do the repair efficiently. Remember, they know just how much it takes to get it back on the road and off their hands. They are just like dealerships and used car marts. Smart. You were right to bargain hard, I doubt the guy lost on the deal. I know I never have.

 

I actually have known this mechanic for years, and he has had this bike since it was new. Also it wasn't even for sale I had to talk him into selling it to me. That is why he was so stuborn on the price. I was just wondering if I overpaid or if I came out ok. I have had the bike for a few weeks now and can't stay off it. Even if I didn't get a smokin deal I am by no means regreting the purchase. :smile:

 

For comparison sake, this spring I picked up a perfect 2001 with 5800 miles, Corbin seat (also with a small tear!) and a Givi touring windshield for $4500.

I think that the best thing for everyone involved would be to trade my stock exhaust for your Staintune high mount. I'll pay shipping both ways! heheh :biggrin:

Hey, what are you looking for, an argument? It was a great deal, it was a marvelous deal, I am totally impressed. How did I know that mechanic was your friend/acquainance/stooge/chump to give his bike away to you for such a cheap price. Afterall, I had no idea how perfect it was in everyway and how much you fell in love with its perfection of coolness. I have agree with the last caller, who offered you the stock mufflers off her $4300 perfect 2001 for your Stain's. You could probably charm the rattle right off a diamond back. You could get us all Stain's at 20% of cost. then we would all be happy like you.

I am kidding you, don't take it seriously, I'm trying to let you know that its not that serious of a deal. It's like Sheryl Crowe sings about. If it makes you happy then why are you so sad? You can't spend your life "letting other people get their kicks for you" as Bob Dylan has said a billion times. I can't define happiness as a yellow 2000 VFR. You have decide that for yourself. and running around asking other people if you did well in purchasing it is letting them get your kicks for you. They have decided what you should want/desire, or rather you are giving that decision to them. The better, kinder, more caring of them don't want to tell you if you should be happy or not, you need to know that for yourself. Why you are asking others. You need to ask yourself the Sherle Crowe question? Material possessions can only make you happy for a short while. The shiny paint gets mucked up and covered in dust, the bulb burns out, the battery dies, the valve burns, the clutch slips, the bearing fails, and after awhile it doesn't matter who's got what ride or how much they stole it for. Its not what or whether the bike impresses someone else or if you skinflinted some fool to get it. Its still the same world with the same problems only you get there a little quicker on your yellow road warrior ,so you have time to contemplate what your going to do next to get rid of the saddness that the yellow road warrior was supposed to allieviate. That's all ego. In the final analysis you have to look in the mirror and see if it made you happy. the cost is irrelevant, as is my opinion of the deal or of the choice you made. It's your life to live and die. In the end it comes down to you, me and the thousand million of us stuck together on this blue boat home sailing through a dark, dark, infinitely dark universe. In the end it only matters that we aren't alone and that we love one another. And that really is what this group of VFR riders and devotees is in the end. Its not a bragging society. It's a help one another society. I sincerely hope that this little sermon has helped you to accept whatever it was that you did regarding the bike. Now you have to decide that it makes you happy for yourself. So stop asking us if you are happy.

All I asked for was if I paid to much for this bike and all I get is a reply from someone who wants my exhaust and some douche bag that thinks I need advice on life. If these are the kind of responses that I am going to get from this site. I won't even bother.

Wow. My comment was my goofy way of saying that I admired the exhaust on your bike. I certainly didn't expect someone to trade a stock exhaust for one of the nicest aftermarket mufflers out there...

I guess if you can't take having people goof around when talking bikes, you won't get a lot of sympathy here.

It was a good price. there have been better and there have been worse deals.
I would have gladly paid that for that model VFR with that mileage.

I think the bottom line is this: the deal has been made, money has changed hands, it no longer matters whether is was a good deal or not. by definition though, it was a good deal: you got the bike that you wanted, your friend got the cash. everybody is happy, right?? the bike is simply worth what you or someone else is willing to pay for it. sounds like you got a good deal to me. oh, and welcome to the site. don't worry about the ribbing, it's all good-natured.

Having just bought a bike after much research and negotiating myself I think you got a fair deal. If you've known the previous owner for years and know the history of the bike thats worth something.

 

I don't want to come across as too serious. I get that you were just joking around. The thing that got me pissed of is the guy who gives the 2 page reply with out a shred of anything helpful. Thanks for everything else.:smile:

In your 1st post you assumed that the mechanic picked the bike up cheap and fixed it up and gave a long-winded meaningless story about that.
Then you post again with no regards to your obviously blatant 1st post except how to live his/our lives and that he just "stop asking us if you are happy". You sound like you think you're a long time member here.

Do me a favor, dont post in any thread that I'm in......I really couldn't stand the pain and agony.

 

Sounds like you got a great deal......and trust me....you wont find a better more helpful group of riders than you will on this site

Remember when Elmo (Beluchi) and Jake (Dan Ackroid) are in the fancy restaurant trying to get one of the members of the band (the piano player?) to throw back in with them. And he won't go for it. So they order big meals and start throwing giant shrimp into each other's mouths across the fancy table linen and chomping down on the shrimp so that the cocktail sauce kind of dribbles out the corners of their mouths; And at the next table are a couple of cute little girls all dressed up for a night out with "father and Mother" who are laughing at the antics of Elmo and Jake. But the stuffed shirt father is pissing and moaning to the maitre de about the bother . And John smiles like only John could, that wise devilish samarai code sort of smile, and he gets up out of his chair and walks over to the table with the stuffed shirt sitting there. And he leans over the guy and says in a fake mid eastern voice, "How much for the women, how much? Your women, I want them. How much for the young ones. I want them, sell me all all of them."

Think about that scene for a minute and then think about this whole discussion. The absolute absurdity of asking a lot of people you don't know if you paid too much or you got a good deal? Like the song goes

"Credit people drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made.
You better take that diamond ring , you better pawn it babe"

Jake and Elmo in their ex highway patrol dodge cruiser were cooler than any prick with the price of a Ferrari or Porsche for the very reason that they didn't care what it cost, they were getting the band back together. They were on a Mission from God.

2000 Vfr

SID -

I bought a 2000 VFR with 38,000 miles on it in April. It has a Two Brothers high mount carbon pipe, a tinted windshield, and a new battery. He was an Iron Butt rider, so the bike was ridden, but well maintained. I paid 3250.00, and the guy threw in extra plastic, the stock shield, the stock pipe, and all the fluids he had for it. The bike has over 40,000 on it, and all I do is find excuses to ride it. You did well. If your ever in my neck of the woods look me up!!!

PS - psst...don't tell the other guys here, but 2000 is the best year because it is the only year they came in yellow!!!:smile:
