Going to sturgis.

Ok guys im going to sturgis in a few weeks. My bike is stock and what would you suggest I buy for it to make the trip better. Thanks for your input ahead of time.

 

Had that coming huh. Riding from Sioux Falls, SD. I know you have been there, you told me on my intro that you have been to frying pan after the bars. Anyways should I invest in a seat? Or anything else that would make my ride a little less painfull. I want to say its about 400 miles or so from hear. Then all the riding I will be doing out there too. I don't have any kind of riding gear. Do I want leather, or mesh or whatever textile is?

 

Sounds like a nice trip! For gear, basically if you get leather, you pretty much need a rainsuit too. For warm/hot weather I find perforated leather gear to be pretty comfortable while still providing good protection. Leather ideally also needs oiling periodically, especially if it gets wet. Textile gear with removable waterproof liners can help you keep cool while allowing to add waterproofing when needed. Mesh textile gear is pretty cool when you're moving and often comes with the waterproof liners. However it's level of protection might not be as high.

 

So textile would be the best choice as far as versatilaty. I don't know if I want to spend the money on leather even though it would be the best protection im sure.

 

If you're not overly hung on style, etc., you can usually find good leather gear at places such as motorcyclecloseouts.com for 1/2 off or more, making it same price or less as some texile gear. For textile many people like aerostitch suits. In any gear, I like a full zipper to connect the jacket and pants, so that in a get off the jacket can't ride up and expose stomach/back to pavement.

 

Ok, thanks. So many things I can blow money on it hurts. Seat, maybe a new windscreen. Among other things its hard to hold back the spending on these bikes. My last bike(95 honda shadow 1100 A.C.E) had nothing as far as accesories. Probably because of how old it was and because it did not seem like people were making stuff for metric bikes until recently.

I would make riding gear a priority. It has been said to dress for the fall, not for the ride. There are so many pictures and stories on the internet of people who had unexpected things happen when not wearing proper gear and the pain and misery they go through. And there are stories of people who have accidents while wearing good gear and sometimes walk away with a few bruises. Of course you can still get seriously injured either way, but proper gear is far better than no wearing proper gear. ATGATT - all the gear all the time.

 

i would suggest that you first buy some good riding gear (jacket, boots, gloves, etc) and then drop some serious coin on a ultra-loud set of pipes. that way you can compete with all the loud Hardley Ablesons out there! ha ha ha....just kidding of course. have a great trip, i'm sure the scenery out there will be gorgeous.

Well I might have to ride the stock seat out there. I was just sent an email saying that all sargeant seats are made to order and it may take 5-6 weeks before shipped. Damn that sucks. Oh well I should have my throttlemeister that I ordered along with my double bubble windscreen which will make it a better ride. Maybe I will get lucky and they will have one to me before I go on 8/7. I love it out there, have been out there many times but never on a bike and the riding is going to be awesome out there.

 

First, what kind of bike do you have?

I have been to both Daytona & Myrtle Beach Bike Weeks. I am warning you now, be prepared for some shocking behavior. Bike Weeks are a showcase of incredible stupidity & debauchery. I don't know how to say this nicely, so I'll just say it. You will probably not enjoy yourself. You will be harassed at least once an hour for riding a "rice burner". You will be harassed at least once an hour since you're not riding an HD. I don't need to go on since you get my drift.

For the bike, a Sargent seat should be the first thing you do. I also recommend the ZG Double Bubble windscreen.

For the gear, Tourmaster/Cortech will probably be your best value as far as quality & cost. First gear makes awesome textile jackets & the Kilamanjaro is widely recognized for being one of the best on the market. I would recommend bringing rain gear that can fit over your riding gear. That way, if you don't need it, it stays in your luggage. If you can't decide what to buy, Aerostich makes the Roadcrafter suit which many riders swear buy. The Roadcrafter suit is designed to be worn over street clothes. Wear boots that are comfortable to walk in or wear motorcycle boots & bring hiking shoes or sneakers with you.

One other thing you should definitely do is wear earplugs on the ride. People who do understand why I say this. It makes a HUGE difference in fatigue over the duration.

03 VFR 800. I ordered the seat, but I recieved an email saying that they are made to order and it may take 5-6 weeks. I don't know if it will take that long(any experiance people????) but maybe they are just saying it COULD take that long. Ordered the double bubble from sporttour.com along with a throttle meister. Have not had a email from them telling me the filled the order. Anybody order from these guys too? Also ordered a tank bag and a bag that goes under the passenger part of the seat from Luggage Locker. They sent me an email so im sure I will get those. Still have 3 and 1/2 weeks till I go out there but I can't wait. Hopefully my stuff gets here first. Guess all I can do is wait.
