gear driven cams

Having seen the Honda vid installing GDC in a RC30 are they really that much more expensive to make than chain driven. I mean they just slotted in pre assembled in a cassette and once the production line is set up.

Any engineers here can answer? Oh and is there a weight penalty in overall and inertia?

 

I would think that the expence would be about the same. It wouldent be in materials as either way its just a couple gears and so.

the expence would be in design and paying someone to design it. but I would think that gdc design would cost less as it is a simpler concept. doesent need a tentioner and a chain.

 

Well the gear driven cams burn more slick50 the chain driven...if they are made out of titanium yes i would imagine they would cost more..they whine alot too and may be a reason that some buyers would look at that as a negative me i think thats a sweet ass sound.....not sure if the v-tech would work with gear drive cam but there are bikes out there that have both.....I am not an engineer don't like riding the trains that much, but i have looked at diagrams and think they are great most race cars use them for tighter tolerences.. but were talking bikes.. I am currently trying to get my 6hp lawnmower incorperated with a gear driven cam so it will not hesite from off idle mowing........

 

Well actually the gear driven cams are MORE expensive to produce than chain driven cams because the gear driven cams have very little tolerance for errors. With a chain driven cam you don't have to make super precise cams seeing as how the chain will pick up the slack.

Think of it as making a swiss watch versus a kid's' bicycle.
