Gauges work, but no lights on gauges

Hi all,

I found another issue with my '91 - the gauges don't light up. I think they did when I got the bike, but I'm not sure. The tach didn't work, so I replaced the gauges. The "new" gauges don't light up; seller claims they were working.

I disconnected the "new" gauges and hooked the old ones back up. They also don't light up.

Did I leave something disconnected? I see there's a combination meter connector (green) indicated on page 1-34 of the mechanic's manual, but that's for a '94 and later. The wires to the LEDs are green. Does the '91 have that connector as well?

 

Instead of swappin parts, do some trouble shootin.
A simple test lite, and a couple longer pieces of wire work wonders if you don't have a multi-meter.
First thing I would check is the bulbs. Then power to the guage light curcuit, from the guage pod to the light switch, of ignition, depending apon where the power is fed from.
