I have a difficult time opening up the gas tank cap - everytime.
Yes, I put the key in and I turn it before pulling it up.

Does anyone else have this problem?
Any suggestions on how to adjust the latch on the gas tank cap?

Yeah, mine sticks too. Not really anything to adjust as far as i can see. If you push down on the front of the cap as you turn the key it should come right up though.

you would have to take cap off bike or make shure grease doesnt get into take but go to a bicycle shop and get a small bottle of Defriction grease used on MTN bike front forks - should do the trick.

Hi tonyl. I've had that problem too sometimes if I don't push the cap down while turning the key. If i push the cap down while turning the key then let it go it flips right up nicely.

Yes, I have had that happen a few times. Only once did it actually stick for more than a moment. I just wiggled and jiggled the assembly and open it came. (And I live in dry Arizona so don't think it is a climate issue...)
A very small quality control issue methinks.

I usually just force the gas cap open (wiggle jiggle push and pull), but I've been worried that I'll break something - such as snapping the key.

Let me give it a try this weekend with the tips/trick suggested by all, and I'll report back.

Thanks for the foggy comments and help!

Ive had a 04 vfr and the gas cap worked great, but the 06 vfr sticks really bad. It took me several mins one day to get the thing open. One of the two pins that are supposed to retract into the cap seems like he's not doing his part. If you find a fix lets me know.

this happened to my nighthawk a few months back. it was so bad i was worried that i was going to break my key trying to open it. visions of running out of gas stranded in the middle of nowhere before i got it fixed, or hundred and something dollar fixit bills flooded my mind. but it turned out all it needed was a couple of squirts of marine corrossion inhibitor/lubricant sprayed into the key hole. i never had another problem with it again. key west has really salty air that reaks havok on anything metal. i can only assume san fran couldnt be to much better...

It is because the fuel here is £ 1.00 per litre that the tank does not want to let go whats left in there .
    That`s why mine sticks too.

so I haven't ridden the bike in about 1 and half weeks.
I just went to try and open the gas tank cap with the suggestion of pressing down on the top of it.

I tried for 10 minutes - I can't even get the damn gas tank cap to open now?!

we have had this issue, we eventually got it open & sprayed (very carefully) some silicone spray lube in to the inside of the cap. it just appears to be a lube issue & for us this fixed it. i'm just gonne do it once a month or so to keep it all lubed up. i didnt use much and being that it is flammable i'm sure a couple of mil in the tank aint gonna do much harm.......

Finally got around to buying some silicone or tefalon spray lube. I sprayed the 2 metal latches. It now works perfectly. Amazing!?

Thank you everyone for your help.
