Went on my first longer ride after buying my 04’ today. The tank was Almost full when I left and after 62 miles the last dot on the fuel gauge was blinking. I pulled in to put gas in and it took less than 3 gallons. It went to full on the gauge. After I got home and put it in the garage I thought I’d check what the gas gauge said and there was only 2 dots? I turned it off and back on and it said there was only 1 dot? Did it again and there was 4 dots? There’s no leaks that I’ve ever seen or noticed. Any idea what the issue is?

How many total miles on that 2.5-3 gallons?
How many miles from the fill-up to the garage?

About 65-70 including short test rides for the 3 gallons. Maybe 10 miles from fill up to garage.

So you are getting just a bit better than 20 miles to the gallon before your fill-up.
When you were doing your "test riding" were you full throttle - on hard - brake hard?
Riding "easy" you should expect around 38 or better miles to the gallon.

If the gauge is acting up you need to keep track of your miles between fill-ups.
My '98 begins to flash the last indicator with about 1 gallon left in the tank, close to 1/5th of a tank.
I know that I can go another 20 miles easy at that point.

The guage can also be way off it the bike is on the side stand, especially if the fuel level is less than half.

Perhaps refresh the connection to the fuel sender, unplug and replug, to eliminate that as a cause of resistance as well.
