Well, I got all the Ram stuff and got my Garmin mounted. Bought one of these to run off the battery:

Amazon.com: Garmin Nuvi Hardwire Cable (Mini-USB connector) for Garmin Nuvi: Electronics

Here's the problem: with the GPS off, I plug it in. The unit comes on, starts to load maps, then goes to a blank screen with a little picture of a computer at the bottom. Nothing I've tried thus far keeps the thing on.
It works fine in the house on the adapter, and on its own internal battery.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

it sees the voltage over the wire as a PC USB cable instead of as a charging adapter. Some cell phone cords, even though they have the same USB on the end have the problem.

The good news is, there's a way to make it work.

At a certain point while it's booting up and before it makes that linked up screen - there's a spot on the screen you can press and hold to enter a hidden setup screen. The setup screen will display things like what voltage etc the unit is receiving. You won't have to make any changes, just exit the setup screen and the unit will function normally and continue to receive power from your cord.

The bummer is that every time you start the Nuvi up for another bike ride, you'll have to follow the same procedure.

It's out there on the interwebz if you consult the Google machine. I don't have the time to re-figure it out right now.
