Full Choke vs. Increasing the Idle

Hey guys, just a quick question here:

What would be 'better' (aka lesser of two evils), running on full choke, or increasing the idle screw to have it able to run without the choke?

I'm waiting on some carb kits to come in, and then I'm getting my carbs dunked so the slow speed passages, and other crevices that a liberal hosing with carb cleaner wouldn't reach, will get clean.

As it is now, the bike will only start with full choke, but while riding, I can take off the choke without problems, but when I come to a stop, it won't idle, and it just dies.

So to experiment, I ramped up the idle screw (big black plastic one near the middle underside) until it idled at 1,100 RPM when stationary.

Only problem is, that while riding, when I let off the throttle, it just sticks at 3,000 RMP for like 30 seconds, then slows back to 2,000 RPM the 1,100 a short while after.

My question is which would be better to set it at? It'll be a couple weeks before those carb kits get up here, and my bike is the only wheels I got.

Also, the current tank of gas has a full can of Seafoam in it, would that affect anything other than a slight RPM discrepancy?

    Thanks guys!

    What year and model

I've got a '96 and the on-board owner's manual says to start it every time with full choke, then push it in after no more than a minute.
Also, idle around 1000 is normal. So if you had to dial it up, it was too low.
Are you describing the idle/air mixture screw? I have a Kawi that has a black knob that comes out from the center of the bank of 4 carbs. I don't think the idle adjust and the idle/air mixture screw are the same thing. But will look it up in the manual.
Sounds like your vacuum piston is sticking. Disassembly/Cleaning is where you start. I'm no carb expert, have re-built some other models, but not the VFR, yet (knock)

    Your question!

I looked up some pics in the service manual. The black knob is probably the "throttle stop" adjustment (idle).
Which is worse? The choke full on comes with warnings about a lean condition. I would say running with the choke on for extended periods is worse than monkeying around with the idle to keep it running.
