So, I bought a 1990 VFR750 as a project bike a while back. Bike had some problems and a couple of carb leaks, so I removed the carbs, replaced the bowl gaskets, cleaned out the carbs, etc. I put everything back together and the bike started and ran great. Warmed up w/the choke cable, turned off the choke, and bike revved normal, seemed to run great. Of course, with my work/kid schedule, I got busy and wasn’t able to get back to the bike for a few months. A few nights ago, had some time, so I went out to the garage and tried to start it up. The bike was hard to start, but seemed to be warming up w/a high idle/choke on. Once I took the choke off, the bike would not idle even as I tried to keep it running w/the throttle. A night later, the bike would not idle w/the choke on or off. It will momentarily start up and then die. I noticed the fuel pump does not vibrate or hum when the key is on. The fuel pump relay has three connectors. When I jumped two of the connectors (positive & ground?), I would get a momentary sputter from the fuel pump w/the ignition key turned on. Also, I have been doing this work w/an auxiliary fuel tank. The stock fuel tank is off the bike. Gas is new and I even rationed some “Seafoam” into the mix…. Seems like the bike isn’t getting any fuel….. Any ideas??? How is the fuel pump supposed to operate?? When the bike is running?? When the key is on?? ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

I believe the fuel pump is fired by the ignition pickup. So if the motor stops running, the fuel pump stops pumping, and if the bike is laying on it's side on top of you in a decreasing radius turn, she doesn't burn you to death in a flaming ball of pumping fuel fire.

Word is it should essentially run fine gravity fed *click*, so try jumping it entirely. Use a fairly short line (clear if possible so you have an idea what's going on) without any tight bends in it and let gravity fill the carb bowls, fuel pump or not, if there's gas in the bowls, the thing should run. If it then runs fine, you know where the problem is.

that would work fine for testing. I wouldn't count on it to work on the road that way. Gravity feed won't keep up below a half tank for extended periods of freeway riding.

Your bike might not be running right because you failed to drain the carbs when you let it sit, and now that crap ethanol fuel has clogged your pilot jets.......

Fuel pump won't click after it senses that the carbs are full, so if you want to test it after doing the bypass wire you need to open up a float bowl drain screw.

Clogged???? It only sat for a couple of months....Would that be enough time for the gas to goop up and clog things??? I'll try draining the bowls.

I'll also try the gravity feed check....

THANKS!!!!! Feel free to keep up on the advice....I could use it!

I seem to be having similar issues. Mine died going down the road the other day. I put the choke on to restart it, it did momentarily, then died out. I tried to jump the fuel pump directly today with a hot and ground wire, nothing happened. I don't know how to test the relay? I have been riding mine daily though. No periods of sitting. 73k on it. As far as I know, the carbs have never been messed with and up until this happened, they were running great. Averaging 46mpg.
