i was going to replace my chain and sprockets tonight, i went to look up the torque values in the manual and saw that it says i should replace two gaskets behind the cover. is this necessary?

Buy a sheet of gasket material at your local auto parts store. If you need to make gaskets, you can trace the outline of the respective parts. I've done this for your exact application. It is fairly easy. Make sure you apply grease to both sides of your new gaskets when installing, so next time they won't tear apart when removing.

or you could just re-use them - they really don't seal anything...
