Being and amateur-- I am trying to set the front forks. How do I know where I am? I mean, is there a stop somewhere that tells me how many turns in or out I am? The guy who had it before me said he attempted to adjust them some, but when I got the bike, the forks were uneven. I don't get this. with weight off the front end, the fork sag space is different on each side. I am going for 32mm, right?
    Help a fool...

If your sag is different on each side, something is up with your forks. Maybe he put spacers in one and not the other, different length fork springs/weak or collapsed spring), maybe the fork oil in one leg is overfilled/insufficient, or maybe the fork legs are not level. I would take at look at them. Make sure to have a repair manual for your bike...AND if you are going to look inside of them to check out what the prior owner was up to, be sure to fully unload the weight off the front end, and put a lot of pressure with a large socket on the fork top cap when you unscrew it, or else that sucka can go flying...I have seen it happen. As far as adjustment goes, check out this thread by Michael (it is in suspension articles below)...
