    Need to remove the Forks

    1) Will the bike balance onthe main stand when wheels and forks removed? If not any advice, cant see a safe jacking point?

    2) My forks are a 60K miles pitted mess, need to clean up.... Polish or paint? Anyone got any good approaches

    Thanks

I've had the front end off on a 2nd Gen and 6th Gen and from what I remember, it will not balance and want to fall forward due to the weight of the engine. With the center stand down, I then place an ATV lift under the front header pipes to support the front. I have never had an issue handling it this way. Later today, I will be taking my front wheel off to have it powder coated so I will be doing exactly this. I can take a photo if you'd like to see it.

What Stewart said. Center stand down, jack under headers.

use a car jack and piece of wood to support under the frontpipes. Be very careful as the bike can come forward off the stand, dont ask how I know.
rub down and paint to your choice, there are a large number of wheel paints that are useful or basecoat silver and 2k clearcoat.

Have someone put weight on the rear, so that the nose is in the air. Then slide a milk crate or some wood blocks under the frame/block/headers. Done that with several bikes. Works just fine and the backward angle prevents the bike from coming forward and off the center stand.

OK, so I just took my wheels off this afternoon and this is how I usually handle it. I put the bike on the center stand, then roll an ATV lift under the headers and jack it up just enough to get the front wheel off as seen here.

Here is a close up from the other side of the bike as to where I usually place the lift. I am using both sides of the lift, but I'm sure all I would need is one. There is not a lot of weight here as most of it is on the center stand.

In my case, since I am only removing the front wheel, I prefer to remove the lift and let the forks just rest on something a little more stable. However, when I've had the forks off in the past, I've had the bike elevated for months just using the center stand and lift. Just be sure that you activate the locking mechanism on the lift - which I believe most have.
