Greetings, I just noticed some spots on the garage floor and starting looking around the bike. It appears that I have a leak on the front right fork. My brother does a decent amount with bikes/ATV's and we have the service manual, can we replace the seals on the forks or would I need to redo the entire forks?

Also, depending on what we need to do how difficult is it to do? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, riding with any kind of leak is obviously not a good idea. But, how much danger would there be in riding the bike with this small leak?

The main danger is from loosing braking power due to oil-soaked pads and brake rotor.

With the service manual, it's not hard to do.

Best to replace pads and thoroughly clean rotor after seal replacement.

Did you forget to state what bike or prefer to keep it a mystery ??

Another update - so after cleaning off the forks and riding it around a bit more, it seems like the problem occurs when the tubing goes down into the slider and then comes back up. When the tubing is exposed again it has small amounts of oil where it went into the slider. From what I've found the seals go at the top of the tubing...

    Any ideas?

more than likely the seals, an easy fix, but check the fork tube when you have them off for a nick, it may have cut the existing seal.

Forks are probably the number 1 neglected maintenance on bikes. Over time, condensation will build up in the forks, the spring in the fork seal itself that keeps the seal tight against the tubes corrodes, rusts, and breaks. The seal is no longer tight against the tube and you gush oil every time the fork slides. Also corrosive old oil will eat away at the seal and it deteriorates.

Or, there's a nick like beta said but you don't need a nick to have leaky seals.
