Had the bike in the shop on and off since April 06 - electrical demons are nightmares.

Apparently, I had a regulator go bad at some point back then and blow everything - tach, all lights, CDI, battery, fuses, etc.

First shop - "I can't figure it out, get it outta here"

Honda dealer - replaces everything *but* the R/R, doesn't daignose anything, bike runs for 2 weeks and then leaves me stranded 170 miles from home. All components blown again. $$$$$, plus a gigantic pain to get the bike back home.

Next shop - figures out it has to be the R/R overcharging the system. I ordered a used CDI, as the new ones are $800. It's for a 2000 VFR, and claimed to be good for a 98 VFR (my bike). It's not.

I need to find another CDI, and am not having any luck on Ebay. I've contacted a few salvage yards. Anywhere else I might look?

And has anyone had a similar problem? I've only ridden her about 5 times in 2006 because it just can't stay running.

The R/R's are around $200 or so, at least for a 93 model as well as the stators are a little over $200. When you say CDI I am not sure what part you are refering to. I am about to order a stator for mine as I just fried soem more wiring, replaced a battery but the charging system is still not right. I put on a new R/R but then I didn't get any change in charging voltage so I put the one that was on the bike back on it. Right now I am trying to determine if I have an RC36 or not. My guess is that I do since "RC36" appears in the VIN.

As for other places to look, try Service Honda, http://www.servicehonda.com. They usually have the lowest prices.

Vinny - Capacitive Discharge Ignition - a.k.a. ignition module, ignitor box

Steve - just curious - why isn't the Honda dealer that missed the bad reg on the hook for the ignition module? If I'm understanding you right, they went through and replaced the parts that cooked without looking for a root cause. Have you asked them to stand behind their work? Seems like they would owe you something, even if it were the part sold at cost.

yeah, that's crazy that they didn't even check that. it's like the age old saying in medicine, treat the problem not just the symptoms...
