Looking to do my first oil change with my new bike! I've got a 1990 vfr 750. Wondering what type of oil and filter I should use for best performance. Thanks for the help!

There will never be a right or correct answer as to what oil & filter is best. So the safe approach - until you've decided to research hours upon hours and make your own decision - is to go with what the Honda engineers designed.
I bought oil and filter for a whole season. I got three one inch longer bigger PL14610 Purolator Pure one filters for the 800vfr and 05-40 2 qts, 10-40w 4qts,10-50 4 qts Castrol Power RS racing syn 4T that's good for three oil changes. I have 05-40 in the motorcycle now with 250 miles on it with a Purolator PL 14610 on. I like to adj the thickness of syn with the outside air temp sometimes mixing the W of the oil, but using the same brand. I do the same with my turbo neon. CAN O WORMS! Due to its age, you may want to continue using the same or similar oil to the previous owner. Filter is a different story you have more leeway with filter. If that bike has been Dino oil for all or most of it's life you may want to keep it that way. Switching to synthetic could become troublesome. So when people start telling you to do this or that just be careful, take suggestions with a grain of salt, use the knowledge you gather to make an informed decision and a little but of gut feeling never hurt anyone. I agree with Bitterpil. A bike that age that has been on regular oil all its life should stay that way. I have used semi-suthetic in mine since new and just switched to full synthetic so don't know what if any issues I may encounter there. Probably none. As far as the filter goes, IMHO, the bike was engineered for the OEM. You can get cheaper filters that may be as good and dollar or two cheaper but what's the saving really on that? That's the cost of a cup of coffee. I stick to OEM filters.
