I just accomplished the first oil change on my VFR. I did it at the 350 mile point in the break-in. I put in Honda GN4 10W-40 (the stuff the manufacturer puts in them from the factory). I'm going to run this oil until about 1500 miles and then switch over to Amsoil 10W-40...I think.

Now, the funny part of all of this...those clips on the fairing are terrible...especially when one waits until after breaking two of them to read the manual (which tells you how to remove them without destroying them.) *sigh* Plus, I broke a filter wrench I bought to do this project. I ended up going back and getting another one...one that didn't break.

It amazed me how many shiny specks of metal I could actually see in the old oil. Makes me glad I took the old stuff out right away.

What I've never understood is why engine manufacturers don't just break-in engines at the factory, I'm pretty sure some machine that would apply varying load and varying throttle on the motor could break it in in a single day. It would stop people from ruining the motors AND let the buyers have fun right out of the crate.

I always change the oil on a new bike after the first 100 miles and then at the recommended break-in range of 600 miles and then the recommended intervals from there.

If you think the oil looks scary, cut the old filter open with a pair of tin snips or something which won't put shavings in it when you cut it open (not a saw). I have a special too for cutting filters open, which looks kinda like a tubing cutter or a can opener, and cut mine open every time. The first time will look the worst. After that, there won't be so much metal in it.
