Bought myself a 02 VFR 800 about two weeks ago and I must say I love the bike. Upgraded from a 2010 Ninja 250R. I'm now noticing a few issues that didnt' bother me at first but i'm worried about it, my bike does not display air temp (guessing sensor issue) and radiator fan comes on as soon as i give the bike some power (has kept my temp down below 210 through traffic), Not sure if my thermostat is faulty or it's because the guy i bought the bike from cut the air box to allow more air. I don't feel safe with the air box so open so i'm going to buy an oem air-box off eBay, pretty much taken off another bike. My VFR needs to be cleaned a little more, i've been working on cleaning the rear rim up cause I like the single side swing arm. Any help would be appreciated, I will continue my search for the solution. I love this bike, it's so much fun to ride and has plenty of power, not crazy like a GSXR-750 i've played on, but dam good power (gotta love that VTEC). Just recently moved back to Colorado and must say mountain twisties are much more fun than the streets of VA.
Congrats on your purchase, i used to have a 02 Vtec i really didnt care for the vtec feature, it was more annoying then helpful. The valve clearance check job is more expensive from the complexity of the system as well. You dont really have to worry too much about the air box, it wont mess with the fan, the previous owner probably did a airbox mod to it. I didnt cut mine up but i did remove the snorkel and the flap. Contrary to the belief the Viffer is much more powerful down low then any 600 or 750 ive ridden, it has way more snap off the line. top end isnt as fast but bottom to mid this bike kills.
I noticed that, bottom end is dam good. I think the same thing was done to my air box, i haven't done a top end run, would like to but not sure where. I have pushed it a little, thought i was in sixth but i was in fifth gear. VFR hauls, a lot faster than i thought it would be. The VTEC is fun when i want to use it, keep forgetting about it and keep shifting right when it hits, really trying not to do that, I usually shift around 6grand when going slower, but i'll take it all the way to 12, especially to get away from crazies on cells in traffic.
I'm not sure what the problem is ? Engine temp kept below 210 ? That's okay; very okay ! Temp is okay between 174 min. and 240 max. At 248 you're in trouble.....You get a warning on the display... So....what solution are you looking for ? (maybe my English is not good enough, but I don't understand...sorry)
Sounds like his fan is staying on all the time?? What temp do you notice the fan coming on at? It should kick on around 221-223 degrees. If the fan is coming on well below that, it could be the temp switch which is screwed into the left side upper radiator.
Starting tinkering today and found out that the wire going to the thermo switch was grounded to the frame via a different wire, so soon as i turned the bike on the fan was on, always. but I put things back to how it should be and let the bike warm up. the fan comes on at 220 like it should. so that was an easy fix. and i figure that my temp sensor is probably no good, I took that out today and tried cleaning the contacts but that didn't do jack. so i might eventually buy a new sensor, don't really need air temp but it would be cool to have. and I think my bike was repainted at one point, think it was originally silver now blue and silver. whatever i plan on doing a complete repaint anyway. I saw one of those hong kong fender kits that had a paint scheme that i really like. but after doing some research on the forum found out that they are poo so i'll paint it. gonna to white with black going down the middle. gonna see how much it cost to get someone to do it. if that's too expensive i'll buy a gun and borrow a compressor and do it myself. I'm pretty decent at painting just lazy about prep, but i'm going to keep this bike for a while so i'll take my sweet time and get the paint right. found stock decals on cheapcycleparts.com that my bike is missing anyway.
Your air temp is on the left button on your dash. Press them for around 8 seconds and voila....Welcome to the forum from Laguna Seca
now is that just the left button, I pressed it for about 8 to ten seconds, all it did was change from MPH to KPH after about 4 seconds.
