Last week I purchased my first bike a 1987 VFR 700F2. The bike is in good shape but could use some updgrades. I am a gear head with my car but know absolutely nothing about upgrades for the bike. What is the best slip-on exhaust and where can I find a new seat for the bike? Also, are there any tips you have for owning an older VFR? shaughn
You will find varied opinions about which exhaust is best. When it comes to the bottom line, it is really personal preference. Search e-bay for a seat, or maybe you can luck out and get one thru servicehonda.com. You could try for an aftermarket Corbin or Sargent.
Welcome and congrats! I have F1 exhaust on my bike (came on it when I bought it) and I think it sounds great. I've seen all sorts of exhaust fitted to them, Yoshi sounds good as well. As far as tips just make sure to keep her maintained, and she will be with you forever! Oh, and post up some photos of your bike!
Welcome to the club, and congrats on your new bike Shaughn! One thing you will learn is that it doesn't get any easier finding parts for a 21 year old bike each year. Like was mentioned I think, ebay, craigslist, the buy & selling forum on here.
Thank you for the advice and tips! This bike is just one more hobby to add to the collection. I will post pictures of the bike later this week after I have at least cleaned it up a bit. Does anyone in this group live near Boston? shaughn
We have lots of New England members Shaughn. Post up a post in the North American thread under North east (see below). and see who bites. To give you an idea, here are some members in NE. Bubba Zaneti, Nozzle, NeverlosT, Hater81, 91yellowveefer, MRJoelieC, Phatpat33, Humpty072, Alter ego....to name some. You can also go under the heading "Community" up top, click on it, then go to "members" and then select "member map". This takes a second to load. Here is the link to post a thread for NE residents. Check out the current threads on NE riding groups, and either post in them, or post a new thread asking for riders in your area. http://vfrworld.com/forums/usa-north-east/
Welcome aboard, Shaughn. Imagine that, an Irish boy from Boston. Enjoy your bike, the older ones are still fun to work on. There are plenty of classic owners here who can help if you get stuck.
Being the gearhead that I am with my car I decided to do a general assesment of the bike before taking it for a ride. So yesterday I took of the fairings, cleaned all the grease and grime from the bike and removed the gas tank to change the air filter; and what to my surprise should I find but a mouse nest in the air filter compartment. It covered at least half the surface area of the filter. I could not believe it and it only reinforced my belief that the bike has not been serviced for some time. So needless to say, I am now changing all the fluids and giving it a good tune-up. I was also surprised to see the carbs were not filled with crap from the nest. Sorry for the long note. shaughn
After having the bike for over two weeks and spending time to replace all fluids, filters and clean 21 years of grime off, I spent the afternoon riding the bike. I had not been on a bike in over 15 years and was surprised at how fast I remebered how to ride. I had a blast and can't wait to get back on it tomorrow. I have also decided to strip the bike this winter and rebuild it; it should be easier than working on my car. Though the VFR700 Interceptor is my first bike, I can see why people still love these bikes.
