So my first post to this forum was all about how I wanted to turn my last vf500f into a streetfighter, well I ended up riding it all last summer bone stock, and fell in love with the bike as-is. Then, in a rather scarring moment, I had to sell it to move back to missouri with my then fiance. I was pretty pissed, ended up letting it go for $900, MINTY 84 vf500f, only thing it need was fork seals. Ever since then, I've just wanted to have a complete Original VF collection. Sorry for the long story, just thought I should clear up my... change of opinion on the VFs since I got my first one haha. ANYWAY I'm currently riding a 94 fzr custom fighter, and my (now) wife keeps begging me to ride it, so instead of risking my precious project, I decided I could use this as an excuse to pick up the first of my VF collection. After some searching, I found what seemed to be the perfect bike Everything about the bike pains me.. they repainted the whole thing burnt orange (looks good...i guess..), chopped the license bracket, put on these lame faux carbon fiber rear turn signals, and half-ass brushed the red paint off the front forks. But I got it for next to nothing with 20k miles. It's got a few quirks to it, the carbs need to be cleaned, and after riding for about 10 minutes I noticed that the oil light begins flickering if the choke is off and my RPMs go below like 4k. It doesn't idle long with the choke off, even after its good and warm (carb issue I am guessing). Also after taking it to a parking lot for my wife to take it for a sping the battery started going dead after starting the bike 3-4 times. I had to roll start it to get home. I kind of think the oil light/battery problem could all be the same thing, rectifier bad maybe? I'm taking it to my mechanic buddy who owes me some money tmrw, but didn't know if anyone on here had some input. Things I'm going to do for sure -coolant -oil/filter -carb clean out Should that fix all my issues?

The bike not staying at idle without the enrichener is a pretty sure sign that you've got a carb issue. Either your not getting enough air or not enough fuel into the system, which could be as simple as adjusting the screws or you may need to actually pull the carbs and clean them.

The oil light shouldn't come on at all over 500 rpm if your oiling system is working properly. The fact that it's coming on at 4k rpms isn't a good sign. You may want to check your oil pump and make sure that it is working properly, or at least check the oil pressure while it's at norm op temp.

The battery dying could just be the battery itself. Charge the battery overnight on a trickle charger until it gives you a green light (more than 13.2V). Then fire it up and check the voltage at the battery with the bike at idle. If your above 13.4V then your charging system is OK.

*on a side note, there is usually a reason that people practically give these things away.... them neglecting it, running the crap out of it and being on it's last leg are usually the top three*

Also make sure to check that the condition of the carb boots. It is possible that they are not seated corrected or because of their age could have cracks in them which is allowing too much air to get into the carbs causing the bike to run lean. A simple test is the start the bike and while at idle CAREFULLY spray a small amount of starter fluid around each boot to see if the engine RPM's go up.
