Mine does the same thing, I was wondering about that myself yesterday because I really topped it off and within minutes I was down one bar. The sensor is pretty sensitive, have you noticed that it will change sometimes while you are riding? It happens on some of the back roads I ride on when I get to about half. It goes up a bar then back down again.

I've noticed the same thing. I filled up the brim yesterday after paying cash for a $12 fill up. Only got to 11.47 and was down one bar in short order.

Of course, shifting at 11k could have been a factor. :)

Have any of you tried filling it while on the center stand? I do it from the kickstand usually, and even when i top it off, i am down a bar very shortly. Maybe on the center stand you could get a little more in...
I find it amazing how much more massive the bike feels from an empty to full tank, it is a strange sensation.

I have tried refueling on the centrestand, side stand, sloshing the tank a bit to make sure there are no airlocks. Nothing seems to make any difference. I think that this is just the way the sensor reads. I have also noticed that around half a tank it seems to go further on one click of the gauge. My guess is that the gauge calibration isn't quite right. Given the odd shape of a motorcycle tank it would be very difficult to get spot on. Overall though I think the gauge is pretty close after the first click.

I find the same thing if you can get it full enough that first bar dissapears very quickly, I wonder how far you can go on the flashing red bar? still seems like there's lots of gas left, has any one ran out?

I've never run out, but I've gone 40 miles after the reserve indicator started flashing.

Mine works well on any tankful. I always fill it on the cstand, and would get 25kms or so before the first bar disappears. Thereafter, with just cruising flat road speed, the gauge reads steady, with the odd fluctuation when between bars when riding twisty.

The moment I see the single flashing bar, I usually have 4L left. Or I'll just read off the trip meter and fill at about 320kms, depending on how the bike has been ridden.

And yeah given the shape of the tank, it feels like the last half goes faster.

you guys crack me up, all I gots is a analog gauge to go by, then a little red light telling me I'm almost out. I myself don't worry about that last few drops in filling, nor do I go to the extreme side of running out. Never understood this running out of gas thing, must be the pilot in me. Will say this thou concerning the car, the wife never keeps the tank full, it's always on the empty side. what wrong with keeping it more on the full side. ok thats my rant, I feel better.

    Hey RVFR:

Do you know if the little sensor can go bad regarding the red light that tells you you are almost out of gas?

I have noticed on my 97 it only comes on when I turn my ignition on, for a brief moment, and am about to start the bike. But I have run that tank uncomfortably low and it has never turned on? The analog gauge works fine.

    Any thoughts?

I'll one up RVFR, I don't even have a gauge on my 86' all I know is at 160-180 miles (depending on riding habits) on a tank the idiot light comes on(the origanal idiot light & sensor from 1986) I can ride about 5 or 10 miles & it will start to cut out. On reserve I have pushed it out to 225 miles on a tank, the bike died @ the gas station after work after going maybe 200 yards from work to there. Personally I prefer to have pessimistic gauges that leave me more gas than I think I have vs. ones that are actually empty when they reach empty(I have cars like this, very annoying). I like to play roulette w/ my fuel level going back & forth to work just so I know how far I can push it if it ever becomes nessecary.

I was wondering how the rest of you fill 'er up? I've noticed the pump stops itself (safety kill) but leaves quite alot of volume up in the top of the tank, so I have to manually pull back the black evaporative seal to keep filling till it nears the metal bar on the top. I've noticed this doesn't cause my gauge to go down a bar until about ~20miles. (5th generation)

anyways I was also wondering what you all call the red bar? my last bar will blink but nothing is red!

    hope this helps.

Yep it does that at start up. so at least you know the light works. only way I knew if mine worked for sure as I was thinking maybe it doesn't too, was I pulled of the fuel line, stuck on a longer hose to a gas can, then opened it up and watched inside with a flash light till I knew she was for the most part dry turned on the key weird thing was at first I went shit, it's not working only to look back again there it was on, must work on some sort of electrical resistant. then I jus fill it back up watching for the light to go off then again went and re drained it this time with the key on Yep Bingo she's working.

same deal here with the exception that I have never seen all the bars. Always comes up one shy -story of my life!

How many miles do you's 6th Gens get out there on avg.? Last fill up I finally got to 150 without seeing it start to blink on that last bar. The other times it started blinking, I had ~135mi on tank and still looked like I had plenty left .. I feel like it should go 150 pretty easily. I don't hot rod'r too much

That depends, around the city I get 140-150 miles till the blinking last bar. I figure there is about a gallon left at that point. On the highway cruising at 70or so I can go 200 miles to the same point. Haven't really thrashed it for a full tank so not sure what I would get then but probably similar to the city. I don't usually like to push it that far on a tank as I don't like to run out. Did that in my younger days and decided it isn't fun.

most of my riding consists of back roads so I'm guessing 140-150 would be about right.
I too don't like to run the tank down too far (no sense in doing that), but then again, I really shouldn't have to fill up till 150 anyhow. I've checked the tank when I've hit the blinking light and I can see the gas sloshing around in the tank -certainly not emptybout (at ~135mi).
I'm still new to this bike so I spoze I'll just have too watch the level of the gas in the tank when it gets low till I get a good feel of how far I can go.
