    This was written by Alexander Tyler in 1787
    It was written in regards about the fall of the Athenian Republic, however it is interesting and holds much truth through history.

    A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.

    The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.

    What do you think?

    im honestly not familiar with Nigeria or its government.

    But I am sure that if it is a democracy and all democracy follows the sited pattern, then I am sure Nigeria is in one of said stages.

    Seems very similar to what's is happening here now. More and more people want their "share" of the government pie and I don't see that changing. The whole "spread the wealth around" mentality in a lot of our politicians may be a contributing factor in the downfall of America as we know it.

    Jev, I had to read your post like 10 times to get what you were saying...D@mn AVATAR!

    I'll agree. Do people realize the government doesn't make money to give it away? They only take it from others...better hope someday your not one of the "others" then!

    Hey super:
    I like the quote, but I will warn you make sure you check references when quoting historical thinkers. Trust me, if you don’t, you’ll get burned.

    I do not have access to my local library at the moment so Wikipedia had to do! See below:

    The following unverified quotation has been attributed to Tytler, most notably as part of a longer piece which began circulating on the Internet shortly after the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election:
    A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

    The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

    • From bondage to spiritual faith;
    • From spiritual faith to great courage;
    • From courage to liberty;
    • From liberty to abundance;
    • From abundance to complacency;
    • From complacency to apathy;
    • From apathy to dependence;
    • From dependence back into bondage.

    This passage actually comprises two quotations (the first paragraph being one, and the second paragraph and list, known as the "Tytler cycle," being the other). Both can be traced back to the 1950's, and they began to appear together in the 1970's. No original author can reliably be determined for either quotation.

    Playfair cycle

    The following quotation, known as the "Playfair cycle," has achieved notoriety as it pertains to the "Tytler cycle":

    ...wealth and power have never been long permanent in any place.
    ...they travel over the face of the earth,
    something like a caravan of merchants.
    On their arrival, every thing is found green and fresh;
    while they remain all is bustle and abundance,
    and, when gone, all is left trampled down, barren, and bare

    Look up William Playfair for more info., seems like Tytler and Playfair were early statisticians. I’ll have to read more about them later.

    Thanks for posting Super, I learned something new today.

    Well, in four days we'll find out whether or not this country will be turned over to those who choose the path of "voting themselves money from the public treasury" (yours and my hard earned money, to be exact), and rushing headlong down the path of "apathy, dependency, and certain bondage". History is a strong and reliable teacher. Perhaps that's why those who seek this path strive to rewrite, twist, and suppress history at every opportunity.

    OK, I'm depressed now. Think I'll go for a ride while my VFR is still my property.

    To wit:

    Excerpt from an article by David M Walker in the latest Fortune magazine. He served for 10 years as the Comptroller General of the US.

    “Yet any such calculations (talking here about the present credit crisis) are penny ante compared with the fiscal disaster that is bearing down on America. It’s no longer and event in the misty future… 78 million …boomers (will retire) over the next 17 years. The entitlements due from Social Security and Medicare present us with a frightening abyss. The costs of these current programs, along with other health-care costs, could bankrupt our country….the costs of these programs start to threaten our solvency in the next several years…The US Government Accountability Office (GAO), noting that the Federal balance sheet does not reflect the government’s huge unfunded promises in our nation’s social insurance programs, estimated last year that the unfunded obligation for Medicare and Social Security alone totaled almost $41 trillion. That sum, equivalent to $352,000 per US household, is the present-value shortfall between the growing cost of entitlements and the dedicated revenues intended to pay for them over the next 75 years…”

    The more people who qualify for these entitlement programs the tougher it will be to get public opinion on the side of changing them.

    Interesting, what would happen to a country of 301million people if it fails, can only think it would split into smaller easier to manage State/countries with various trading zones, could anyone see that happening eventually in the US ?

    Im not sure how it would work. One thing is for sure. The rules will not be the same. Before a country was separate. Economies were separate.

    Now,

    Now the world is almost one. The brake up of the united states will effect the entire world. Busines is much much much more involved and integrated than it was years ago.

    One small company can sell to the entire nation rather than its own small community. How will that business be effected when the whole system is torn appart. Some business rely on that system and the revenue of the entire nation. The business of the small community simply wont be enough.

    Is A. Tyler the guy who also predicted that public stonings would be the only punishment handed out for convicted barn burners in the future? JK. I'm sure what he said back in the 1700's could be seen as revealing our modern troubles, but so could many other predictions from others, Nostradamus for example. The minute I start worrying about predictions from 100's and 100's of years ago, I might as well start a commune to live under the earth's surface to begin a new civilization. I will not live my life listening to all those people in the media trying to scare us.

    btw- I could live my life gawking at jev's avatar though. WOW! Jev, is she a friend of yours?

    I think our society has fallen enough in the past 8 years or so..
    Do we want to complain forever or become part of the solution?

    None of us are perfect, whether we strive for the better or keep dwelling on the imperfection is decisive to ourselves being citizens or a leach for the rest of our country.

    Being a citizen is not a right, but a privilege, live up to it.
