This is in the Classifieds too.

As much as I may not want to do this, it is time to sell my 1997 Honda VFR 750.

I have owned this particular bike for 5 years, it has a clean Delaware title and 23,XXX on the odometer. I used the VFR to pull double duty as I started to explore the world of track day riding. If you don’t know much about the VFR they are one of the best street bikes ever made. In short, the VFR does everything well and the engine is damn near bullet proof as the bike has gear driven cams instead of a chain. Here’s the list of mods I’ve done since I owned it:

    1. Stage 1 jets
    2. K&N Air Filter
    3. R&G Frame Sliders installed
    4. Rear Stock shock rebuilt by Race Tech for 180lb. rider
    5. CBR F3 shock internals in front forks with Race-Tech Springs for 180 lbs. rider. (The CBR internals give a little bit of rebound adjustment).
    6. Thurn Motorsports tail riser; raises the rear 1 inch for better turn-in. (It now turns in like 600…a 10 year old 600 but still a 600).
    7. Vortex clip-on’s
    8. 520 Vortex chain/ sprocket kit (This really made the mid-range come alive on the track, only 1,500 miles on the sprockets and chain).

Most of these mods were done for track riding, but made the VFR nice to ride on the street too.

But the bike also comes with some extra parts as pictured like:

    1. Clymer manual
    2. Extra Electro Sports Regulator/ Rectifier
    3. The solo seat cowl
    4. Brand new set of Dunlop Q2’s
    5. A race front end and rear tail section from Air Tech Stream Lining
    6. Stock handle bars
    7. Stock muffler
    8. A few other odds and ends and stock parts as pictured.

I didn’t think I was going to be selling the VFR so soon, so I picked up the tires and the race fairings to make the VFR MORE of a dedicated track bike.

I have taken very good care of this bike. All the fluids have been changed at the beginning of the season or last Fall depending. I had all the coolant hoses replaced along with a new thermostat installed. New 10 wt. fork oil, the clutch and brake fluid were changed this past winter, I was meticulous with oil changes. Again, mechanically I took really good care of the VFR.

However, cosmetically she is rough on the left side. When I bought the 97 from a guy in NJ, the left side panel was pretty busted up. I welded it back together with the intention of painting it. Well I got into track days and that 200 to 300 bucks went to other mods and since I was riding on the track I just never took care of it which I know many of you understand that philosophy.

I’d love to see the VFR go to a good home where it will be ridden and treated well. It’s been a great bike and if you’ve never owned one…well it’s one of those bikes that really stands on its own. Honda got these machine right from 1990 to 2000. Those were the best VFR years. Some of my track riding friends were getting tired of hearing how great the VFR is from other track riders LOL! They were starting to think it was a conspiracy.

Oh, and the Pirelli’s currently on the VFR have three B group tracks days and maybe 800 street miles on them.

    $2,400 takes everything.

    God bless,

    BZ

Hey Bubba I am kinda at the same point. My 2k VFR has a lil over 40k miles and I am looking at an 03 VFR (still a VTEC skeptic). Trying to pick up the 03 VFR this week and keep the ole 2kVFR for now. Your 97 looks good and has some nice mods.

    Thanks emon.

If you know somebody that would like to get into VFR's here's a good deal LOL!

Seriously, the mods have made it nice and I think I am asking a pretty fair price.

    It's different for sure.

I've only had it on the track once. Its very hard to ride but very fun at the same time.

I am saving nickels for a total rebuild at the moment.

    O2:

    Geez, were to begin?

Well, with my limited experience the first thing is it has a very narrow powerband. About 10,000 to 13,500 keeps it “on the pipe” as they say. It can rev to 14,500 and beyond but there appears to be no benefit out that far except to blow up your engine. The TZ’s do not have a rev limiter. If you are outside that range it’s a dog and slower than hell. Since it’s only a 125 it’s not like it has gobs of power LOL! It weighs 185-190 lbs. and is 35-40 hp in the power band.

When starting out you have to rev the damn thing way up and burn on the clutch to get going. If not done right, you stall.

You have to ride the thing with a level of aggression I am not used to. Most bikes we ride are way beyond are capabilities, but the TZ is WAY beyond. It turns in so fast its mind boggling, the skinny ass race tires have unbelievable grip and the corners speeds it can carry are inhuman. It actually wants you to attack the corners. You can feel it when going into them. The thing is from another planet. I am chomping at the bit for next year already LOL! And I only scratched the surface of what this machine can do.

I’ve reflected a lot recently as you are not the only one to ask what it’s like riding a 2T race bike. In one way it’s hard to describe even though I can try. For myself, I can say that the VFR was a fun track bike and street bike. It was better than my capabilities, but it wasn’t confidence inspiring in areas. Now confidence is all in our heads, but the TZ is so good it’s a reverse. The TZ says to me: “Why don’t you trust me”? I am so much better than you can possibly imagine”! Then what happens? I went into a turn hotter than I meant to and the TZ carved through it like a scalpel, like it was nothing and I could have taken that corner even faster. And I don’t mean a little faster. I mean balls out faster LOL! Another 2T owner called his TZ250 the “Joe Pesci of track bikes” I’ve called the 125 a “Spider Monkey jacked up on Mountain Dew”.

Corner speed is the only weapon you have with the 125 so you have to keep it wound out to keep ahead of people, until you hit a big front straight. Then everybody passes you LOL! Oh and brakes. The brakes are so good it’s like the corner speed, but it seems the TZ doesn’t want you to use the brakes. It wants throttle. Throttle that keeps it on the pipe and attacking turn after turn. The thing is so extreme and so good again it’s like it’s from another planet. I came through turn 10 at Summit-Main in 5th gear on the pipe and when I came in my friend Jeff was laughing. When I asked what was so funny he said: “I could hear you coming and I knew you had that thing wound up, you hit turn ten, no brakes no nothing just throttle and onto the straight. It was awesome”.

I close with this…a gent who supplies parts for these machines runs a race school. His TZ250 will be there and racers at the school, whom have never ridden one will take it out. When they come back in they remove their helmets and have a glazed over look on their face and say: “Where can I get one of these things”?

what would have taken you 5 years to learn on the VFR will now take you one on the 125.
You now see that track riding is a mental game.
thus I hope you will learn to use the fear factor as your friend, you will be able to gauge your entry speed with your gut being in your throat kinda like the first drop on a roller coaster. The days of squaring off the corners and powering out are now gone.
The 125 will force you to ride smooth and fast, it will tell you when you are not doing it right. Listen to it and it will treat you well my friend.
that bike with the skinny arse tires will have more grip then your VFR ever dreamed of as well as being able to lean it way farther over then the vfr.
Enjoy the ride, too bad you can't pass on corners on track days cause by mid next season you would be able to pass much bigger bikes in the corners like they we tied to a post.

I'm telling you Crusty, I hope someone on the board buys the 97. It needs nothing except a paint job if you desire. How many bikes when you get them are turn key and go?

I'd be willing to knock 200 bucks off if a VFRW member wanted it.
