I locked my keys in the car today, so I took the bike into town and on my way back home had a wreck. I almost got run over by oncoming traffic but I ended up breaking several ribs. I'm at home on the couch in severe pain and will be out of work for at least a week, maybe two. I'm just glad I didn't get run over!

It happened so quickly I don't know what transpired. I practice threshold & panic braking all the time but somehow locked up my front tire when traffic stopped suddenly & I went down HARD on my left shoulder @ 35 mph & into oncoming lane.

Bad news for sure. Hope it's not any worse than it seems. May have to force yourself to take a couple days off at least, just to let things chill a bit.

That really sux. ANd ribs take forever to heal. I hope they are fractured or broken and not dislocated. Once dislocated, they pop very easily and it is a few months of delicate breathing all over again. I have dislocated one about 7 times now but it has been a few years since doing so.

We can practice our threshold braking time and time again and may think we are experts in the tactic of threshold braking. Unfortunately, when we are practicing this, we usually have the luxury of picking when and where we do this. But put us in the situation where we encounter an extreme situation on the road, most, not all, but most people will panick to a degree and just grab a huge mitt full of that brake.

I am sure glad that your injuries, though serious enough, are not worse. Just think, your ribs are protecting some very vital organs in the chest cavity. A blunt force trama to any of those organs could spell very serious injury if not death. With that said, and sorry to hijack your thread, your misfortune here is a prime example as to the validity of ABS and Linked Brakes. I know everyone will not agree, but so be it. Your choice.

Take care Gary. You had better not have ruined those shoulder "Interceptor" patches that I hand embroidered and sent to you.

Aggh - not good - but you are still with us - which is the most important consideration!

At the moment just follow the doc's advice. It is all too easy to try and get straight back to work and possibly make things worse.

As for the bike - at the end of the day bikes can be fixed or replaced. I agree with Randy's comments on this. I only needed one scary near miss to fully appreciate the value of the combined and linked ABS system available on later VFRs. It got me out of a big hole when my instinctive reaction was to simply apply a front brake death grip, (and forget all about the rear brake), suffice to say the ABS just took over delivering the maximum braking available from the tyres and allowed me to swerve clear of a head-on. So this one option I look for on all my bikes.

    Take care and heal soon.

Sorry to hear about your crash. You will need some good pain pills if you thinking of working real soon. Broken ribs hurt big time all the time and take a while to heal. Don't mean to bum you out, it's just the way it is. Best is a recliner type chair to sit and sleep in for the first few days. Or real good pain pills, did I mention that?

Take care and heal up. The bike is fixable later. Hopefully you don't have a physical type job. Oh yea a chest wrap helps some.

Sorry to hear, Gary. Yea, healing ribs are a PITA. They can take a long time. Glad you are generally OK. For a 35mph crash, things could have been a whole lot worse.

    Heal soon, bro!

I'll echo what many already said, "ouch, ribs."

God help you if you catch a cold in the next 3 weeks because coughing and sneezing will make you cry like a child.

    Best of luck, heal quick!
