Just a question about the external oiling on these bikes. Did the early ones not have it? Mine is an 84 and appears to have what looks like factory lines running up to the top of the cylinder heads. Was this performed by the dealer or was it installed at the factory on the later ones?
Lots of vintage media press about how horrible these bikes were, and how bad the cams and oiling systems were.

So is the factory oiling sufficient? I see a kit offered by Holeshot performance that adapts to oil filter and oils the cams and top end. Is this something V4 bikes need or is it over kill.

Back in the early eighties when I was riding with other VF riders, no one talked about this mod. I had a FOX shock, Corbin seat, Vance & Hine Exhaust and a Lockhart Oil Cooler (still do). Oil cooler mounted under headlight and had braided lines to adapter that went in between filter and engine. We didn't have synthetic oil or didn't know much about them at the time, so temp was important. Using synthetic oil will do more than worrying about these lines. Polymers in standard fossil based oils start breaking down as soon as you start the engine, synthetics don't.

Not a fan of the oil mod, the lubrication system is just enough to get the job done and robbing oil from the lower end is the last thing I would do. You can repair a cam problem but a spun bearing is an engine shopping event. Just my two pennies on the subject.
