Hello all - just signed up and this is my first post. Got myself an extremely tidy 1990 FM in October last year and really starting to get into it just before it came off the road for winter. Rool on Springtime !! Anyone out there got experience or opinion on exhaust header pipes thermo wrapping. This reputedly increases power output slightly (hey - who needs any more??!!) but I'm more interested in giving my stainless pipes some added protection. Also should have an effect on the hot pipe below the knee syndrome on warm days particularly. Anyone know of any downside to fitting these wraps. Thanks and all the best, Bill, Aberdeen, Scotland
i have my stock header wraped on my 86 500, no problems with it, but it does take it longer to warm up, GREAT!! summer time pertecion as in cooling.
I did my 5th gen headers - the main purpose for me was to keep the header heat off my expensive Penske shock. It was relatively easy to work with, I took my time. You have to paint seal the wrap too, so its a several day process. Theoretically - the hotter you keep exhaust gasses for a longer period of time in the header, the lower the gas viscousity and the higher the flow rate. Higher flow = more power. I cant say that I gained power from just the header wrap. But I can say that the total of engine adds I did - exhaust wrap, BMC filter, Power Commander, and Carbon Slip-on has made a noticeable difference. The most obvious spot is at over 10k rpm. Stock bikes have a flat spot at about 10400 rpm and run out of juice. On my ride the bike just slams to redline, no more 10.4K power die out. I havent ponyed up to a dyno, but I plan to. MD
I've read a few times about these wraps trapping condensation and subsequently causing rust. Anyone experience that?
with regular steel, not sure about stainless but I would beleive it would be the same, you can also shorten the life of the pipes slightly by making the pipes hotter for longer time thus making the steel brittle over time
I have heard that, so for the moment I'm gonna keep running it, and whenever they fail, (I wonder how many miles that is?) MOTAD pipes are probly in my future. I'm guessing I'll wrap those pipes too. MD
