I am in the process of buying a 2006 VFR 800 ABS in its original factory configuration. A lot of people change the exhaust in their bikes.
Could you folks tell me what is the advantage that you get out of an aftermarket exhaust ?

    1. Am I getting any more horse power in the lower band, if so how much ?
    2. how much weight would I be reducing on the bike by making this change ? This would be a big consideration for me as this model is not lite
    3. Is this change just for pure sound effect ?
    4. Is this going to add problem if I decide to add some saddles ?
    5. What is the biggest reason people make this change ?

    TIA, Surf.

    1. usually depends on which exhaust and fuel map you use although it varies..might lose some low end and gain top end from what ive heard
    2. 5-15 pounds? again, depends on what exhaust you get, some lighter than others etc. etc.
    3. for most people...yup...V4 sounds awesome and in their view, worth every penny
    4. varies...i know microns will not work with the factory luggage but it will work with the givi based luggage...i think there is one more that isnt compatible with factory luggage but i dont know. you could get a top case and not worry about the saddlebags until you feel you need the extra space
    5. better sound/louder, looks awesome, take off some weight, better performance, urge to customize their bike how they want it

What Panettone said in his fith bullet, except I would move performance gain to the last part of that list, IMO. If you are expecting a noticeable performance gain or weight savings I think you will be disappointed for the dollars spent. The sound and looks on the other hand are well worth it to me.

    factory slip on 28 pounds.
two brothers slip on 8 pounds.

    hp.... not much.

you can take it a step further with catless headers.

maybe another 5-10 pounds off with the header, but again the hp is debatable.

now although there is not much peak hp to be gained in tuning the vfr, there is A LOT of weight to drop, and a lot of rideability and area under the curve power to be gained with a good tune. It will not show up on peak numbers but it will show up on over laying dyno charts and on the street where it matters.

Replace my exhaust with a set of Leos and a PCV and went out yesterdqy for a 200 mile ride up to the crest and noticed a HUGE difference in performance and handling. side to side was so much easier with all that weight removed

    Weight reduction.

Better throttle to rear tire connection once A/F has been changed to reflect the better flow.

Motor runs better with better flow (once A/F is corrected), will get better MPG when you ride judiciously compared to OEM.

    More HP, more torque.

    Only win in my book.
