I am fortunate to have the OEM "black chrome" pipes on my 85 VF1000F. No rust, but could use a refinish. Anyone know where or how to get that original finish back? It would be nice to buy a new set of originals, but that just ain't gonna happen, so I'm looking for alternatives. Found Black chrome kits on Caswell plating website, but wonder if it would handle the heat. I have decided to paint it the original rwb this winter and the oem pipes would look awesome with fresh paint. Any ideas?

I repainted my engine side cases on the 500. They get pretty darn hot (my bike runs hot) and the paint has help perfectly. I used a good quality black, gloss, high-heat engine paint (cans). I was able to get a really good, gloss finish but it took some practice. I would think that engine paint would be fine for the silencers. I tried it on my rear headers since they were a bit rusty and the paint has mostly burned off, much hotter there though.

Glossy high-temp paint is your best bet. Re-chroming would be extremely cost prohibitive.
